Just on the subject of disputes.... I bought a mobile phone on email some years ago and the seller sent me an empty box! I submitted a dispute and the seller tried to claim I was the one trying it on. Ebay were going to side with the seller at first because it was sent recorded delivery, until I pointed out the postage paid on the parcel was for exactly the weight of the empty box that I received, so it could never have contained anything when it was sent. Seller went quiet after that. They should have been struck off in my opinion because it amounted to deliberate fraud.
very scummy thing to do

Reminds me of when I used to use eBay in the 90s and you didn't have to provide ANY PROOF AT ALL in terms who you were to have an ebay account and people would send CASH though the posts of bloody cheques for items. The whole thing was rife for people taking the mick

@asajj that’s exactly how I started. I still have my private one for the odd bits around the house. It all definitely comes with experiences and learning from the Mickey takers!!! It’s very easy to do though especially if people are already self employed. It’s the best thing I ever did

Since I have opened this thread, my life went downhill a bit. There are worse things to happen but it was a difficult period for me. I did two things: I didn't bother to sell unwanted stuff. I purchased more to feel better ( didn't happen).
I have been listing stuff over the last few weeks and unfortunately, it is slow moving. I sold a pair of shoes on Vinted for £9.50 and a purse for £18 on Shpock. I will meet the buyer on Tuesday morning - hopefully he won't give up last minute.
I also sold a UD palette on Shpock but the buyer didn't turn up. Re-listed.

Sorry to hear that. We've all had times like this but now is as good a day as any to get back on track xx

Only just stumbled on this thread. It's a brilliant idea! I spent 3 years getting rid of stuff and selling it on eBay and finally pretty much finished last September/October. I am not minimalist yet, but definitely have a lot less stuff around, which is great as I hate to tidy!

Still put the odd thing onto eBay, but anything I get rid of now generally goes to charity.

I have sold a few items from the pound shop in the early days, but the profits are poor. Not much happening this week, just a couple of 20p tools sold for £27 (disappointing) and a clamp I paid £6 for sold for £25 and made a net profit of £14. BUT CHRISTMAS IS COMING, Always good for ebay!

Anyone had any luck with gumtree for selling?

I've been looking for a fridge recently and tried gumtree for the first time. Was surprised how much there is on there really. Prices seem pretty low so might not be the best avenue for selling. Maybe a good source of items to offload elsewhere?

Thank you Katykicer, genuinely appreciated. Not there yet but not far either.

Hi @Queen Jess , I've done this at some point but accumulated more stuff back. It is a good feeling to have only what you need.

@Dick Barton sounds great. I usually have clothes, make-up and some books.

@homie I haven't but a lot of people do - I sell on Depop, Vinted, Shpock and occasionally Ebay.

I buy stuff from it but never use it to sell stuff on.

I added a lot more items I wanted to get rid of today.

eBay increased my item limit from 10 to 30 so I had some more spaces.

Some of the books I was gonna sell wouldn't make a profit after factoring postage costs so I'll just take them down to the charity shop.

I'd do a car boot but I have no car and nothing really of worth to sell.

I have sold two old uni textbooks recently. I put them on a few months ago but now it is the start of the new year, it is obviosuly the time when people want them. I am chuffed as they aren't the latest editions so it's good to see them go.

I was quoted £15 for postage from Royal Mail earlier today, I went to Hermes and it was just £2.99.

That would have been daylight robbery from Royal Mail, it's no wonder all these other delivery firms are popping up everywhere these days!

From a consumer point of view, one doesn't care about the difference in service.

Royal mail are really there to deliver letters. Thats why its less than £1 to get a letter from one end of the country to the other.

Hermes aren't really making any money on a £2.99 delivery. VAT = 40p so already you are down to £2.60. Who is actually getting paid?

RM do at least (mainly) employ people directly on a salary with benefits.

I'm not saying only use RM, but do think about what your £2.99 delivery cost ACTUALLY costs. If RM wasn't around do you think you could still get Hermes to deliver for less than £3?

Royal Mail's pricing structure seems to deliberately discriminate against heavy items. Under 2KG and they are competetive, over 2KG and forget it. By way of an example:

Medium parcel weighing 1.9KG second class is £5.05
Same parcel weighing 2.1 KG is £13.75

Heavy or bulky items I go Hermes, smaller lighter I use RM.

As an aside, my local Post Office has now closed down so Hermes is actually more conveneint as you can use any of their drop off shops or have it collected from your home for a small amount more.

Long gone are the days of several RM deliveries a day and a post office in every village.

And no, I do not want my parcels delivered by an Amazon drone.

Had a quiet weekend, but sold a 50p hammer for £20, some scrapers (cost £3) for £17.50, some spanners (cost £5) for £20, an axe for £10 (cost 50p). All before commission. I do have a couple of items that come off auction this week. Both cost 20p. One is on £13 and the other £51 so, be interesting to see what they finish on.

I Had a reasonable week with £10-£20 items, but my best profit, after commission, was £113 for a tool costing around 25p..

Nice one! I just sell my unwanted stuff to be fair so nowhere near what you make :)
Sold another item, £7.00 is on its' way
