If you have specialist high demand skills there are lots of different ways you may be able to sell those skills online and still keep your day job. That way you may not feel so trapped because you would be using lots of different skills to build your own business. Suddely, you will find that you have choices and that you can decide whether you wish to stay in your day job or work on your own projects full time in the same way that Jon the Administrator here, has done - blogging (to position yourself as an authority), ebooks and online training courses are just 3 ways that spring to mind.

Aye spot on

Position yourself as an authoritative figure in whatever niche it is you want to go after. So you would do that with testimonials, reviews, well written and researched blog posts about whatever the service if you want to talk about + do some great SEO around it all and you should be fine @Littlemissraining

Remember that EVERYONE starts at the beginning! There is no 'quick route' so to speak. Sure you can leverage of other people online who are already doing the same thing as you but in Google's Eyes every new website starts at the beginning and it's a case of building that content and getting those backlinks from other sites!

Did I take a risk leaving work?

Well, I thought the ABSOLUTE WORST CASE if it all went wrong would be that I would just go and get another job!

I also saw it as a risk staying where I was to a certain degree because I was then stuck somewhere I didn't want to be anymore doing something I didn't want to do and neither of those two things were going to change without me directly changing them!

In fact, I would say that nobody should think they have a job that is going to be 'safe' for ever, anymore - developing new in-demand skill sets and flexibility is the name of the game, nowadays.

Yeah I mean I worked in local government and apart from restructures I felt secure in my roll.

May not be the case in the private sector that you have as much security

Thanks for your comments. I admire you Jon for what you have done here.

I don't know why but blogs in my area don't really appeal to me and I couldn't imagine anybody being interested in what I do. However, I do think I could get some mileage in training people.

The problem for me is time...I work in a very demanding full time job role and I'm currently studying which is due to finish in October thankfully! After then I think I might have some headspace to work out what I want to do and invest the time!

For the meantime I'll keep enjoying hearing about people's ideas on here!
