We got one for Christmas and apart from a few stews and currys we have yet to really take advantage of it I guess.

I want to use it to make soup, freeze it and then use it for my lunches and so save me some money.

Anyone else had any experience of using these things?

yes they're brilliant for cooking broths, soup, casseroles then freezing batches for future use. I find them particularly good for cooking ham joints, the slow cooking makes them so tender and you can literally chuck lots of stuff in to give the ham flavour. I've yet to try a work colleagues suggestion of making a chocolate pudding but hopefully I will soon.

My husbands a Chef, and uses our slow cooker regularly. I can't cook to save my life, so I'll ask him in a bit for some good money saving meals that you can cook using a slow cooker.

Chocolate pudding!! Would that not go everyone within the slow cooker or am I missing something?

I love using ours. I have a recipe book that covers things like stuffed peppers and dips, but we've only used it for casseroles so far. Will be watching this thread!

We have a slow cooker. I only really use it in the winter to make lovely casseroles, I love coming in to the smell of yummy dinner already cooked! I never really thought about using it for soups as I just make them on the hob, maybe i should give it a go.

I use mine loads. It's the best thing ever. It's great for cooking cheaper bits of meat. I'll buy a brisket joint, and cook it for the whole day. The meat just falls apart, so I serve it first day with veg as a stew, then I usually have loads left which can become a pie filling another day. It's brill for batch cooking.

I love my slow cooker, but I'm on my own and don't have a freezer - so if I overdo the quantities I end up groaning every time I open the fridge to see the same stew/casserole/soup I had the day before...and the day before that etc!

Perhaps best to think of dishes that you can perhaps change slightly then - cook the basis of spag bol, and some becomes chilli, or cook a chicken casserole, but then take half out before you add gravy and then turn the half you take out into curry? I have the advantage of a family and a freezer, but I still think you could get some benefit from one of these as a single person.

Yes - maybe I could be more creative. I used to share with my lovely 94-yr old neighbour but he passed on recently :( - he had a fabulous appetite. I just need to remember I'm not cooking for two now and put a bit less in the pot. It's still a very economical way of cooking I think, even with smaller quantities, and like RedAlix - you can't beat that welcoming aroma when you come in the door!

Has anyone ever cooked anything sweet in theirs? I'm on a group on FB that posts recipes, and I've seen a few 'self saucing chocolate cake' recipes, and jam sponge/pineapple upside down cake things... But I'm a bit scared to try them! Anyone had any luck? :)

Go on give it a go and let us know how you get on. I quite fancy chocolate pudding. Imagine working from home with the lovely smell of chocolate pudding doing its thing for hours in the slow cooker ;D

If anyone has a recipe I am happy to give it a whirl and report back.

Yes - again curries, chillies, casseroles/stews, but not ventured into desserts yet.

Good for when you are out all day but have time to prep in the morning, or for batch cooking.

We have been using our Multi Slow cooker every Sunday for the last few weeks

That's the one I have got, as you can see it is a bit of a 'jack of all trades' ones but we have been doing great with cooking giant bits of meat in it and then having spare meat left over for sandwiches the next day

Plus we have found joints are costing us less then the usual 'sling in the oven' roasts
