My girlfriend and I quit smoking on the 5th January.

We used to share a 20 pack each day which costs around £7. So we took it in turns to put £7 in a pot. Pretty soon we had a crazy amount of cash in the bedroom so banked it. We've actually kept it up and have since saved over £1000. We now save the £7 a day by just transferring it online on payday for the month.

Just booked ourselves a 5 star all inclusive weeks holiday in Fuerteventura. Even when I was skint I still scraped together £7 to put in the pot - as if I was a smoker I'd have scrounged £7 for cigarettes.

Got £300 left for spending money. We'll be carrying on with it too, its a great way to save money. I only wish I quit sooner then I'd have thousands more in a savings account!

Wow, well done.

I quite smoking 6 years ago and did one of those online calculator things and I've saved £12,800 since I quit.

I haven't saved the actual cash, but I reckon most of it has gone on my hips in the form of biscuits.

Enjoy your holiday!

Well done and it's amazing how quick the money builds up, especially if you both smoked. When cigarettes were cheaper and you could smoke in pubs, it seemed more attractive, but paying £8 a box and standing outside in all weather's is very unappealing. Enjoy your hols :)

Thanks guys! 2 weeks today!

I feel miles better too. The weight hit me a little, I think the 1-2 hours a day I'd normally have a cigarette in my hand I now have food instead! My fitness levels have increased and I no longer feel self conscious about smelling of smoke!

Anyone thinking of quitting definitely should. Just for the money you save! Not going to lie, when I'm sat outside the pub with a pint I do miss having a smoke!

Yep, well done! My husband gave up 2 years ago using e-cigs (after smoking for 35 years), and only used the e-cig for a year and is now non-smoker. He smoked tobacco rollies which were cheaper, but still, we both used to feel a bit crap when we only had £10 to get some food shopping, and half would go on tobacco. I smoked for about 7 years but gave up age 25.

Wow well done, the dedication to put the money in the pot even when there's no immediate gain like with smoking is immense! I tried this for a while but didn't have the follow through - being able to motivate yourself is key to a tip like this I guess
