Quite.

We're an island. We could - and should - be on top of this.

Instead, it's out of control, and 100,000 people are dead. Numbers are usually a great comfort to me as they tend not to tell lies, but I have no appetite to do some quick maths on how many more are already most likely baked in.

My hope is that once the next few weeks are over there will never be the same number of seriously ill cases or deaths again. There could still be some deaths throughout the year but not the way they have been. Clearly that is no consolation to people who will still lose people.

EU officials are demanding that the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca supply Covid vaccines to Europe from UK factories.

"UK factories are part of our advanced purchase agreement and that is why they have to deliver," EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Wednesday.

The demand is part of an escalating row between the EU and AstraZeneca, who developed with Oxford University a top Covid vaccine.

AstraZeneca reportedly said last week the EU would get 60% fewer doses than promised in the first quarter of 2021. It cited production issues at a Belgian plant.

A confidentiality clause binds AstraZeneca from releasing the details of its deal with the bloc.

EU officials and AstraZeneca are due to meet later on Wednesday.

This scares the bejesus out of me. I can't work out whether it's a genuine cock-up or Brexity willy-waving. Either way, people are going to die as a result.

I think they might start bringing the primary schools back first Then the secondary schools later. Maybe as late as Easter, but I hope not. January already seems to have been going on for 12 weeks.

The primary schools in our area are still very busy. Loads still going in and car parks pretty full all day with teachers in work. Still plenty of idiotic parents too. My son's partner is a primary school teacher and her school have been getting the teachers to drop off learning packs to kids' houses and pick them up when completed as well as online work. She has had to isolate 3 times already due to kids testing positive in her classes. One day a mother brought her son in then later phoned to ask the school to bring him home, as the covid test she had the day before had come back positive! D'oh! What a fuckwit!

Ye Gods on someone sending their child to school when still waiting on test results...school staff need to be vaccinated asap. It's turning into a national scandal.

It seems to be a normal one in terms of kids going to school around here too, but then again I've got a large teaching hospital and three supermarkets within a 20 minute walk of home, so it's perhaps not suprising.
