It seems molecular biologists are now being asked to help do the lab testing for the virus. My partner was asked last week and is looking to start next week. Hopefully that will increase the number of tests being done. There are also loads of university labs with equipment that are currently doing nothing which could probably be turned into testing facilities. But there have been no plans to do so yet.
A key issue I think is we don't know if the virus spreads in warm weather. If it does, then it would likely kill far more people than flu throughout the year. If it does stop in summer, hopefully we'll have some sort of drug to help next winter and we should be better prepared with stockpiles of tests, ventilators etc.
I know it's too late now, but the government should have gone into a semi-lockdown like Hong Kong did. They contained the virus quite well last month and are only seeing cases now due to people returning with the virus from other countries. People can argue all they like about China's data giving a false impression that the virus wasn't that deadly...but China panicked and went into lockdown for a reason! That should have been our first clue. Unpopular opinion maybe, but Boris Johnson and co are being praised and at the end of all this, will probably be seen as heroes...but I just don't see it.
I hope this at least give the Tories a kick up the backside to at least properly fund the NHS in the future and not, say, vote against giving nurses a pay rise.
