Unless we find some way of testing and tracing reliably in huge numbers this will not go away anytime soon. For me the government have been bloody useless up to now at handling this, so I have no confidence that they will suddenly get a grip. I can't imagine that lockdown could be relaxed for at least another 4 weeks here, and then what? How do we stop it flaring up again in the big cities where people are packed on public transport? In my opinion we are just buying time. We need drugs to treat the very ill more effectively and ultimately a safe vaccine that can be produced in huge amounts greater than any we have ever seen.

I agree BUT 17,000 people die from flu in the uk each year I think and we don’t have a cure for that either and people just carry on their lives each year

It seems molecular biologists are now being asked to help do the lab testing for the virus. My partner was asked last week and is looking to start next week. Hopefully that will increase the number of tests being done. There are also loads of university labs with equipment that are currently doing nothing which could probably be turned into testing facilities. But there have been no plans to do so yet.

A key issue I think is we don't know if the virus spreads in warm weather. If it does, then it would likely kill far more people than flu throughout the year. If it does stop in summer, hopefully we'll have some sort of drug to help next winter and we should be better prepared with stockpiles of tests, ventilators etc.

I know it's too late now, but the government should have gone into a semi-lockdown like Hong Kong did. They contained the virus quite well last month and are only seeing cases now due to people returning with the virus from other countries. People can argue all they like about China's data giving a false impression that the virus wasn't that deadly...but China panicked and went into lockdown for a reason! That should have been our first clue. Unpopular opinion maybe, but Boris Johnson and co are being praised and at the end of all this, will probably be seen as heroes...but I just don't see it.

I hope this at least give the Tories a kick up the backside to at least properly fund the NHS in the future and not, say, vote against giving nurses a pay rise.

We've just had a phone call to say that Father-in-law has Covid. He's 92 with underlying health issues, so not much hope of recovery :(
Most of the residents in the care home are now infected.

So sorry to hear this, let's hope for a Easter miracle and a speedy recovery to all.

A family friend of ours who lives on the back of our houses (next street) her husband passed away from COVID19 and his wife doesn't know as she's recently come out of hospital for other health reasons. She's at home and thinks her husband is in the hospital, it was a tough few days getting over the news.

Then yesterday on Facebook and I believe the MEN site had an article on a 6 month old baby fighting for their life. That really hit hard and the realisation that this disease is not stopping for anyone. All thoughts and prayers are with those that have been affected by this. Stay strong, believe and we will come out this stronger.

ONS data on coronavirus deaths
The Office for National Statistics found:
  • A total of 4,122 deaths involving COVID-19 were registered in England and Wales between 28 December 2019 and 3 April 2020 (year to date).
  • Including deaths that occurred up to 3 April but were registered up to 11 April, the number involving COVID-19 was 6,235.
  • For deaths that occurred up to 3 April, the comparative number of death notifications reported by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) on GOV.UK for England and Wales was 4,093.
  • NHS England COVID-19 deaths by date of death, which come from the same source as DHSC but are continuously updated, showed 5,186 deaths by 3 April; 793 less than Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures for England by date of death (5,979).
  • The Easter Bank Holiday will have an effect on the number of deaths being registered.

it's quite interesting looking at the infections/deaths in US states

I don't get how USA started a few weeks after us yet are doing 100,000+ tests a day already and are already flattening their curve. I would guess it's a private healthcare thing

Looking at that list of infections per state most of those states are bigger than the size of the UK yet have naff all deaths / infections and as the US started their lockdown weeks ago I wonder if it's just the case that the virus is dieing out in those states a lot quicker

I am beginning to wonder if we shouldn't have wasted 2 weeks of 'make sure you wash your hands' and 'everyone go to Cheltenham' as I think that's what has really screwed things up for us

There are scary reports coming out of care homes today. It is difficult to see how you can contain an outbreak in a care home without the right equipment. When I was nursing in a care home we were always offered a flu injection as well as our residents so you did not get much spread. This is much more serious Jon

But we have a vaccine for the worst strain of flu and people at risk get it free every winter and others can buy it for less than £10 at Boots, Asda etc.

The point above about Universities having equipment sitting unused. I lead a team of Microbiology and Molecular Biology Technicians at Teesside and we were approached by the NHS just before we closed on March 20th. They were desperate for equipment and PPE, so we loaned them RT-PCR machines and primer kits along with loads of nitrile gloves from our main labs in Middlesbrough and our National Horizons Centre in Darlington, and we are allowing them to use our facilities at Darlington. I'm sure other universities will be helping.

It just demonstrates how poor the government's efforts have been that hospitals are having to do this piecemeal. I have no doubt that the 2 week delay has cost around 10,000 lives, but still some people will insist that Boris is the new Churchill.

Right so how is it that the US can get all this stuff quick smart then?

I guess their healthcare system is just funded better and they have access to more stock and more money!

I see they are saying we had about 6,000 excess deaths for the week ending 3rd of April. The highest weekly death rate since they started recording deaths weekly. Higher than any recent flu outbreak. Interestingly the extra deaths are not all due to corvid19. Obviously there will be less deaths due to road traffic accidents, industrial injury etc. There is going to be a bit of time lag due to the Easter holidays

Think (well I know!) I'm gonna be one of the self employed people that is going to fall through the cracks with this

I'm not gonna get any of this Self employed grant from the government. Your 2018/2019 self assessment had to be MINIMUM of 50% Self Employed income to qualify and in that year I was still working in my full time job earning decent money so my income was like 60% PAYE and 40% SE so I won't be getting anything

bummer lol

I should think when this calms down a bit someone offering advice on how to make money from home will strike it rich. If you can hold your nerve it will be a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Once we come out the other side, god knows what the state of the country is going to be in. It's just going to be more hardship after another.
