How do places like Debenhams, M&S, John Lewis etc survive all this?!

but more to the point why do these places operate so close to the wire. I would say ever rising city rents plays a huge part

It’s weird how Well supermarkets have adapted with all this by cutting special offers and making the stores save

retail is a different beast
I think the supermarkets have played an absolute blinder - they've justified cutting offers by increasing shop floor and delivery staff, and increasing home delivery slots. It was an almost immediate adapt-and-survive strategy and they should be applauded for it.

Debenhams, M&S and John Lewis? No, I can't see them surviving this. I really can't.

Well Debenhams and John Lewis were already on the ropes even before this, so it doesn't look good.

Anyone been for a haircut or cafe/pub since they've reopened? Did the prices go up? I am thinking many businesses will take this opportunity to put up prices while they can blame it on the cost of Covid measures.

A couple of youtubers I follow have predicted a period of indeflation - That is inflation and deflation at the same time: The costs of things you don't need come down as companies try to sell off their excess stock, but the cost of things you do need, like food and services go up.

I saw a comment on Twitter earlier which said, apart from supermarkets all other high street stores are now just a shop window for Amazon!!

Cafe prices were the same on Saturday for us. I can FINALLY work outside of the home now so will frequent a few more this week but I would say the ones I go to which typically aren't chain ones pivoted and offered takeaway food and drink during all this so have managed to keep money coming in. If you are a national chain you can't really go and do that on your own I guess, you need the higher ups in the company to say ALL the stores can open!

That would be lovely, but we're talking megabucks here. £1.57 billion is barely going to touch the sides, and that's significantly more than even a group of megastars could front up. Stormzy is a shining example of walking the talk in terms of giving away a significant chunk of his earnings to give others a foot on the ladder.

I think we'll see a lot of "An Evening With..." type shows at theatres When We're Back (and please GOD let that be soon - if community transmission is as low as the government says, then it's no more dangerous to sit in a theatre than it is in a pub) with big stars giving their time for free in an effort to do their bit to raise funds.
I totally agree about Stormzy, a wonderful example of someone using his money to action the changes he wants to see. I really think that others should follow his example, less ranting on Twitter, more finding a way to make a difference.

But I also think that there's no point hoping or expecting the rich to save theatres etc for every Stormzy, there are another hundred who aren't interested. I personally think if you love your local football team, theatre etc then donate what you can.

This is taken from another site I use but I can well believe we are about to see large firms like John Lewis Etc. either lose totally or see them contract
I hope this is wrong!

I've been trying to use Amazon less but it's annoying that lots of items are only available in Amazon!

Pret are closing stores

Again I think the issue is that during lockdown these national chains all just shut completely while the independent stores across the road kept open and offered takeaway so they effectively had no money coming in for 2/3 months!

I do wonder though how long they’ll keep us social distancing and one in one out etc etc if it does all fizzle out
I think a month after no deaths and no new cases would be what they're looking for. I do think a lot of people will start to make informed choices before much longer, however. Just so long as every dickhead doesn't tear the arse out of it.

I agree. I think come sept / October when schools are back and they CLEARLY want fans back in sporting events by then will move is down to lemon and herb status and then it will just be a case of being vigilant

I hope that is the case, but did you see Anfield and the Pier Head last week? Also seeing London yesterday it was a bit concerning that some places seemed to be really busy.

This holiday or yours is just not meant to be. I was supposed to be spending my first Of 14 nights in Bordeaux tonight. Sigh.
Gah I know. Resorts open, flights going but if USA don’t let us in not much I can do!!
