Sweden have a different mentality to us. If the government say it is a good idea to stay indoors, work from home etc, people have such trust in them that they just do it. So, although they aren't in official lockdown, people have just accepted that it is the right thing to do. Whereas here, the government have to make it official, or people just don't listen!!

Exactly.

We were given advice like they have in Sweden and the whole nation responded by going to the beach and packing out the nature reserves.

Furloughed as of Monday here now. I've done the math and i think with the decrease in spending i should be able to survive just fine.

The dithering and indecisive government.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Iceland. At the moment they are carrying on as normal but getting the police to do contact tracing and isolation for infected people. it seems to be working but they will have no immunity to the virus when the tourists come back. I hope they can get antibody tests here soon so that people who have had the virus and recovered can get back to the workforce. In other news my old university is going to be turned into a Nightingale hospital here in Bristol.

so peak next weekend in the UK they are saying

US HMO is saying their peak is 2 weeks away

hopefully, things will turn for the better.

If the UK peak is spot on and then the results of us all staying in kicking in I think we may get back to normal in middle of May you know!

I can't see how we can get anywhere near back to normal by May. They all know the real key to this is testing, but even if you believe we will be at 100,000 tests a day by the end of April it's still going to take ages from then to get a significant amount of the population tested. And there is still no sign of a reliable antibody test to show who has had it.

In the meantime NHS workers are still without sufficient PPE and are dying or suffering symptoms, so off work. The volunteers, student nurses and retired ex-NHS staff are only temporary fixtures, so what happens when deaths slow down and those people aren't available? Is there a plan if it flares up again?

I suppose in my (uneducated mind on this subject!) head I think that

1 week until the peak - That information comes from experts
Experts have also said they can see lower numbers of people being admitted to Covid19
in 2-3 weeks we will see the benefits of everyone being indoors so we will be over the peak (which is a result of people who might have been in hospital already for 2 weeks prior to sadly dieing)
We should then be on a downward slope

I'm wondering how the tinfoil hat brigade will square the desire to get out of their houses with the very real possibility that that's only going to be possible with the kind of movement tracking that has been one of the darker sides of smartphone use for the last decade.

100,000 tests a day by the end of the month is a nice idea, as theoretically, that's the entire population tested by the end of August. However, testing isn't going to make Covid-19 go away. Also, I want to know if I've definitely had it. I could make myself useful.

For those symptom watching, bum is less, er...productive today. Which is good, as my sense of smell is starting to creep back. I could also taste the garlic in the chilli I cooked earlier. That's Day 7 of mild/moderate symptoms. I should add that apart from a very runny nose and stuffed sinuses, I have had NO breathing problems or cough (and neither has my 83 year old mum). I use my lungs for a job and she's as tough as leather, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I personally am going with a let's see what happens approach. I don't think anyone really really knows. Until we either get a vaccine or a cure or know what immunity means for this virus then we are fighting blind.

Experts are predicting a plateau rather than a peak which could last several weeks maybe even months.

Our FM in Scotland advised of this yesterday :

The First Minister also said media reports of Covid-19 peaking next week were not accurate, saying: “I want to be very clear, that nothing I have seen gives me any basis whatsoever for predicting that the virus will peak as early as a week’s time in Scotland.

There was a further article last night to advise that these measures may last until Sumer holidays.

Personally I’m taking every day as it comes but under no illusion that this will blow over in a few weeks.

As long as the predicted “nice weather” for the few days doesn’t make people think it’s ok to drop the rules and head out to places.

We've just found out that Father-in-law's care home has a confirmed case, with several other residents showing symptoms. Worrying times. Dad is 93 and very frail with advanced dementia :(

I've heard this a few times, but how is it supposed to work?

Everyone is told stay at home so you don't get the virus.
Then get tested.
People who have had the virus can return to work.

I can't be the only one who sees a problem with this. What are all the people still at home who haven't had the virus supposed to do? Stay home indefinitely until a vaccine is found?

Isn’t the point that we can then go back to normal as we will be around people generally who have had it already and aren’t spreading the thing while at the moment we don’t know who has had what

The government are hoping that when around 60% of people have had it, that will give herd immunity to the people that haven't until a vaccine is available. But as you say, how will we know who has and hasn't had it when they aren't testing and the antibody test hasn't yet been declared accurate?
A presenter on the news tried out the antibody test the other day, and it showed that he had antibodies, so had been exposed. But he said that he has had no symptoms. Scientists are now questioning its accuracy.

I am being extra careful as my husband is nearly eighty and a bit frail. However we both had quite bad coughs a few weeks ago which could have easily been the virus. If there was an antibody test which could tell us if he had had it I would be happier to help more. I am a retired nurse. Even though I am too old to be on the recall list I am sure I could be useful in some capacity. I think we will have to build up some sort of herd immunity as we will need all sorts of workers. People can't hide in their houses for ever. Children generally seem to get mild symptoms so I think there is quite a good case for letting them outside unless they are living with someone who is extra vulnerable. This virus is going to become endemic. We are going to have to learn to live with it. Even if they get a vaccine it will take months to manufacture sufficient quantities and vaccinate enough people to make a difference.

100,000 tests a day sounds a lot, but with a population of over 66 million it would take 660 days to test everybody. And the government say there is no reliable test for those who have already had it.

On a lighter note.. This social distancing along with the schools being closed could COMPLETELY irradicate head lice. Just needs parents to create a sheep dip style trough for the kids, dip them for two consecutive weeks... TAADAAA.. NITS GONE FOREVER!!

While the number of deaths is at a record high, the daily count of new, confirmed cases dropped from 4,450 on Friday to 3,735.

Sorry to hear this Topaz. Hopefully he's fine and hasn't come in to contact with it.
