We've just had a phone call to say that Father-in-law has Covid. He's 92 with underlying health issues, so not much hope of recovery :(
Most of the residents in the care home are now infected.
Sorry to hear this, hard news for you :(

Did anyone see Britain's Got Talent last night? the amount of money Marks and Spencer have thrown at advertising during that must be unreal given it is a flagship show in saturday primetime slot. They sponsor the show and have about a 2 min bit during the commercials where all the celebs from BGT sit around a table and discuss M&S food.

I kind of think this was all agreed and paid for before Corona and could end up causing a big hole in their bank balance. Is anyone ordering M&S food at the moment?

Mind you, at least there will be lots of people at home to watch it.

Yeah a lot of companies are going to have spent a BOATLOAD of money months ago on advertising and not getting their desired return with M&S being one of them!

Good news about your friend. On a more worrying note, China and South Korea are seeing higher new cases than there have been..

In positive Covid-19 news, a friend of mine who works for London Underground is now breathing unaided in hospital. He says he's had incredible care from medical staff, who are nothing short of heroic.

Ah, that's wonderful news!
My Dad is still holding his own today, which is also good news :)

I think we won't get a true picture until we start including deaths in care homes and at home. Our doctor is dealing with a worrying number of deaths in a local nursing home but won't get a test result unless someone goes into hospital or he catches it himself. The key has to be more testing. We need to know who has got it and who has had it and recovered.

Interesting article about how this lockdown and have a knock on effect for people’s personal “vices”

As much as we're encouraged to use this enforced isolation to stay fit, learn a second language or work on creative projects, many of us will also turn to less virtuous pastimes to get through the stressful weeks ahead.

Even the government has acknowledged we need that pressure-valve, adding off-licences to the list of "essential" shops allowed to stay open, after supermarkets found their booze shelves swept bare.

"There is something about not being able to control a situation, we don't know how this is going to play out. So people might turn to things like alcohol as a coping mechanism," says Lesley Ludlow, a counsellor who chairs the private practice arm of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

"Then there is the boredom. People have had their social lives taken away from them, so they look for a quick fix to make life feel a bit more normal for a while."

Perhaps not surprisingly, firms that cater to our private passions seem to be doing quite well, at a time when many others businesses are struggling.

Pornhub, a popular adult entertainment website, reported a spike of more than 10% in traffic after it offered free premium access - or what it called "an extra incentive to stay at home and flatten the curve".

And online betting firm 888 Holdings said this month that its outlook for 2020 wasn't too bad, even though gambling on traditional sports has collapsed along with live fixtures. That is partly because customers are turning to alternative - and some say riskier - games online such as casino and poker.

Spanish numbers going down again and they are letting certain industries go back to work again today

New Spanish data released on Monday showed 517 people had died in the previous 24 hours, compared with 619 recorded on Sunday. The number of new confirmed new cases also fell.

The figures came as Spain allowed builders, factory workers and others unable to work from home to return to work, provided they follow strict safety guidelines. It was a return to normality of sorts for some non-essential workers.

On the Madrid metro and at bus and railway stations, police handed out face masks to commuters. But even at rush hour, use of Madrid’s transport system was much lower than normal.

Antonio Álvarez, a self-employed manual worker, described it as a relief to be able to resume work on the digging of a swimming pool on a private property near the capital.

“I think the restrictions so far have worked. If they hadn’t implemented them it would have been disastrous,” he said.

France seem to have extended the lockdown but have given people hope by giving them a date to look towards which I think must help people - maybe that’s how the UK government will do it this week

President Macron’s mission was to provide the French with some rays of hope in the gloom, but without making unrealistic promises.

He did it by fixing a date - 11 May - around which people can start thinking about planning their lives.

Monday, 11 May is the day which from now on will be at the centre of everything.

For many, its prospect will be what gets them through four more weeks of isolation - with all the psychological pressure that that entails. Others will find they can start imagining a world where ordinary things start happening again - like holidays, weddings, work-trips and walks in the park.

But the president was quite clear that the world post-11 May will not be like the world pre-17 March.

I think the fear after lockdown is the reoccurances, kinda like cliff hanger moments that keep popping up. Still find it werid seeing people walking around in masks, previously just thought asian countries did that.

I think there will be reoccurrences but the can contain it much better like they were at the start

everything only seemed to start going belly up when families returned from their halfterm holiday in Italy!
