I'm a Jude the Obscure, I would have loved to go to uni (I did have a go but had to miss lectures to work and couldn't earn enough money or find decent and affordable accommodation) and I would have loved to record lectures for future reference. We were in smallish classes of 40-60 so the students were 'interrogated' (it's what it felt like at the time!), or they asked questions. I didn't come from a family of academics so a lot of the chit-chat went right over my head! Academia is very much like freemasonry: if you weren't born in the right kind of family, teachers, other pupils, and even the staff in administration take great pains to make you feel you don't belong. I still have a vivid memory of that time when a dozen of my colleagues were making plans for a study group (to do mock oral examinations, as these were done in front of a jury), I asked if I could join, and one of them, the daughter of an investment banker, replied 'No because we plan to share books so that we don't have to buy as many of them, however you can only afford to buy paperbacks so you would not be useful to us'... That same student made fun of me when I told her I would go for several days without food... or would make do with table sugar. She was a church going Roman Catholic. In the late 80s, in a student house of eight, we'd take it in turns to get up early enough to go in for lectures with a tape recorder to record it for the rest of us to listen to, then sleep at the back of the lecture hall anyway. Our two music history lecturers thought this was absolutely brilliant (especially the one who usually delivered his class with a large Scotch in hand), so much so, they encouraged others to do the same whether they were present or not. We all did better than we had any right to or needed to, as we were all on a performance pathway with about 10% of our degree depending on music history essays.
The retro version of lectures delivered via Zoom where, presumably, you could record the damn thing and *cough* have your video link go down *cough*.
I do feel desperately sorry for September/October's intake of undergrads who have already had the hard work they put in for their A Levels absolutely trashed, and who are now going to miss out on the entire Fresher Experience.
I'm 'guessing' the 60k difference is for people who ordered home kits and haven't sent them back yetThis makes no sense. Yesterday. 140,000 tests - 80,000 people tested?
If 80K people were tested, what does number of tests mean?
What an absolute idiot
Hope they get rid of him
Coronavirus: Dominic Cummings visited parents' home while he had symptoms
A source close to Dominic Cummings confirms he travelled from London to Durham to self-isolate with coronavirus symptons.www.bbc.co.uk
Just got the rules and information for my school reopening in June. I'm all for getting the kids back but it is very close to being so much of a faff that it might well be better just not bothering:
Parents drop child off at allocated time. Child collected from the car, parent not allowed to leave car.
Child escorted to the washing station to wash hands
Go to allocated classroom with the 6 other pupils in their "bubble" not allowed to mix with other pupils or staff outside of their bubble group.
each bubble limited to one classroom and only certain parts of the school.
One way systems set up which are like walking from london to dover going via manchester.
No playground equipment allowed out.
Separate break and lunch times, bring own food and drink and lots of hand washing of course.
Teachers have to teach their "bubble" but also continue to set work for students staying at home.
Going home is the reverse of the morning procedure.
He won't go, the Tory elite think he's a miracle worker. I have no idea why he and they just don't apologise and say it was very very poor judgement. I think he should resign but I wasn't that interested until they made statements that he was 'being a good dad and caring about his family' so what does that say about the rest of us that did follow the rules when we were ill with children? I should probably just ignore it but I felt really really insulted by it.and now it looks like he's been caught out a second time!
