I don't know why but this 'New' Phase of the pandemic I am finding more depressing than March / april!
Solidarity rather than 'like'. Yup. I'd planned loads of days out being a tourist in my own home town - all the galleries and museums, Tower of London, Madame Tussaud's, the lot. I can now see them being shut down again.

Thing is, if we shut down for two months then open up once more, this will just happen again. Whitty and Valance warned us this would happen, the miserable buggers.

I think lots of people are struggling mentally with all this nonsense more now then they were so before and that is so so sad. I'm gutted my kids are growing up with this and will bear the brunt of it all in years to come. However there is not a lot I can do about it so we are definitely learning how to be home more and have fun in each other's company. Who would have thought!

I would still say the chances of a second national lockdown are slim to none

I think a second lockdown would look very different from the one before. The Govt don't want to close schools or end up with more furlough. If you look at France, we are lagging behind them because so few people gave up WFH despite pleas from the Government. Stricter measures seem likely but I imagine the aim will be to keep primary schools open as these are the kids that make it hard for parents to work. The secondary schools will go on a rota to cut down numbers of teens roaming around, and restaurants will need to return to take out or outdoors eating only.

A complete lockdown is not going to happen though.

The lockdown was to "protect the NHS" as you can see from the graph there are hardly any NHS intensive care units being used at the moment. I don't see any reason to start spooking people with threats of another full lockdown. Older people seem to be taking extra care now and care homes have a lot of procedures in place they never had before. Even if the number of cases accelerates to meet those of France the number in ICU's should still be well below what it was before.

Perhaps because she needs to get back to work or has caring responsibilities or the anxiety of not knowing is worse than the financial hit. With the Government testing structure in disarray, she probably felt she had no choice. We don't know her situation.

£150 over potentially losing your job is a drop in the ocean.

Plus, the testing system seems to have collapsed completely in some parts of the country. Here's hoping it's not for long.

Three schools in my town have sent classes home today due to positive tests. :(
There is just no easy way to do this is there

gotta keep schools open but have to sort of accept that they might be homeschooled for a week or two at random

hurry up vaccine

And where schools are still open it's absolute chaos within them as so many teachers off. It's really unsettling for the kids to turn up and not know who is teaching them. Or perhaps that's just our school that's terrible on comms. It's almost like this wasn't thought through or something.....

That last point is the crux of the problem. It needed an overall plan, not just each school doing its own thing.

So far my kids' schools are doing ok, no chaos yet but last week was only their first full week. One is a college and the kids are only coming in for the lessons that have a practical element, all other lessons are still online. It seems a sensible compromise.

yeah I think Unis go back in the next week or so and apart from practical lessons everything will be done from home / via zoom

Slightly related to Coronavirus as it's gonna be a struggle but I can't believe the Thomas Cook brand has relaunched as a sort of booking dot com type site. Hays Travel must feel like total mugs having bought all those high street stores from them that no one is visiting!
