Latest ONS figures on coronavirus deaths
  • Deaths in UK are above the five-year average - in the UK 11,145 deaths were registered (576 excess deaths). 110 of these involved COVID-19. England had the highest number of deaths involving COVID-19 with 97 deaths, followed by Northern Ireland with seven deaths, Scotland with five deaths and Wales with one death
  • In England and Wales only 99 had COVID-19 mentioned on death certificate (1%) - the 2nd lowest number of COVID-19 deaths since the third week of March. For comparison 12.5% of deaths mentioned flu and pneumonia
  • In total the number of excess deaths in England and Wales in 2020 to the week ending 11 September now stands at 53,376 more than the five-year average. 52,482 mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, 12.1% of all deaths in England and Wales
  • Hospital deaths still below the five-year average - deaths in care homes and private homes were above
  • Deaths at home have yet to fall below the five-year average since the beginning of March. More than 80% of these excess deaths at private homes in the week ending 11 September were among people aged 70 and over
  • Nevertheless, half of all deaths where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were in hospital
  • The number of death registrations may have been affected by the August Bank holiday (31 August). This could have caused delays in deaths being registered the previous week, resulting in an increase in deaths being registered in the latest week - ending 11 September.

I don’t get what’s really changing apart from shutting pubs at 10pm and doing table service

Nope, I don't see much change. COVID is going to run rampant and we will soon be like France/Spain announcing 100k+ cases per day.

Pathetic from the PM and the Government. When serious action needs to be taken, they fluff it.

Yes, given the dire warnings yesterday it does seem like Boris has dithered again. Then again that's been his whole approach. Some people have obviously been taking the piss all the way along, but his" world beating" track and trace system has let us down badly here. Another case of a government who will never learn from their mistakes, because they never admit to any.

It seems to me that too much faith has been placed on the British public in expecting them to use common sense. Some pubs are just full of pissed up fuckwits who after a few pints are acting as if hand sanitizer and social distancing were just a myth. And although some pubs, notably places like Wetherspoons are beig diligant , some are just paying lip service. A pub near me has track and trace - also has a poster on the wall about not shouting singing, etc. Another poster about social distance. Last weekend, there was a loud group of at least ten people squashed into an alcove which could barely fit six. Bar staff collecting glasses and leaning over customers for a chat. Fuckwits.

It's also trying to get people to work from home. Although the traffic is so light where I live, I don't think many people went back anyway.

You can never get 100% compliance with all these rules, but you do need a good percentage. I'm not sure we have that, although impossible to tell for sure as news always reports the worst things that happen.

I haven't done anything different. I'm quite happy to continue to stay at home. It's great.. don't have to make forced conversation at the nursery gates with people I have nothing in common with and don't want to talk to anyway!

I have a nice excuse to just be antisocial!

I'm guessing the 8pm thing is just gonna be pre-recorded like the other 8pm ones were and a retelling of everything he said at lunchtime but with SUPER EASY TO UNDERSTAND GRAPHICS!

I'm hoping that decent questions get asked of Boris. Like wtf are you doing?

Nicola took things a step further (not surprised). No visitors allowed in our house. That's not so problematic for me as I have a very very small social circle. Like a pin head sized. Similar to @Queen Jess, being anti-social isn't a challenge for me. So for me personally not much is changing....yet. I have no family nearby so when my dad does visit (in October) we form an extended household as he lives alone. I really feel for him though as he has made such an effort to make the most of his retirement and force himself out to meet people and be sociable. Now he'll be like the many other elderly, sitting having a mid afternoon nap watching reruns of Deal or No Deal. Still grateful that my kids are still allowed to see their friends. Can't believe in this day and age that I have had to type that last sentence.

Maybe we are doing things like they do in Sweden

An Oxford University epidemiologist and practising GP has said he believes yesterday's announcements show the UK is making a "move towards Sweden" in its pandemic policy.

Prof Carl Heneghan told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that there was a "slow shift" towards trying to control the spread of the virus rather than suppressing it, while minimising social disruption. Sweden provoked much debate about its pandemic approach in March when it rejected a strict lockdown and kept shops and restaurants open.

He said he hoped it would mean an end to "the changes almost daily that are becoming utterly confusing for the public".

Many people still do not understand what social distancing means and about half do not understand what the symptoms of coronavirus are, Prof Heneghan said. "If you don't have this clear message now right through the winter we will have confusion reign," he said.

He said the UK should not "panic" at the "inevitable rise in cases" during winter and reinforce the messaging by building trust, not using a "mantra of fear" and punitive measures.

I am going to hide under a rock for a bit and just earn as much Money Shed money as possible. I have told my friends I don't want to do anything for my birthday as it is during the huge Thoroughbred sales weeks in Newmarket and I can see with how the sales lot are behaving that we will end up in a local lockdown once they have gone home. These people are coming from all over the country and abroad, all mixing together in the pubs/restaurants in the evenings. Many were in Doncaster the other week. Last weekend the Police had to shut down the sale's lads favourite pub as it was too crowded. I just despair.
The level of ignorance is unreal, I met a young lad on a racing yard that I freelance at just before Lockdown and he had no idea what was going on and that was when everyone was panic buying. Seemingly his friends hadn't a clue too. He's a nice lad and wouldn't do anyone any harm but I was shocked at how he could go about his life, not know what was going on. But maybe that's that generation, they don't listen to the news etc, their friend's don't either.

I've decided to spend the next six months making as much money as I can and acquiring as many new (money making) skills as I can. I've got work in my diary for next year and up to mid 2023 in patches, so if I get some new skills together then I'll be sorted for filling in the gaps. Thanks to this site, I've got a (very) small share portfolio and lots of ideas, so I can use the time wisely. Now I just need to keep motivated and telling myself that it will pass.

It seems to me that we are trying things we know won't move the needle much but it's worth a shot and better than if we shut pubs completely
