Northern Ireland voting to do vaccine passports now just like Wales is doing

Only a matter of time I would guess before they appear in England

can't believe Austria are going to do a full lockdown again

I know their vaccination rate is like 66% or something but it seems a bit nuts.

I suppose you only need even 5million people un-jabbed and it can just run through them at 50,000 a day and it take months to go through everyone

We've had no restrictions for 4 months now and just seem to bubble around the same numbers endlessly!

Absurd.
They are making vaccinations mandatory in February too. That's horrifying precedent being set. That a government can inject anything they want into you and there's nothing you can do about it. Given their history I'm surprised the people in Austria are standing for this. Or perhaps they come pre programmed to have their liberties trampled over.

Of course they had to give the new variant the most sinister sounding name they could: Omicron. Sounds like a God from some sort of Pagen devil worship or something.

So many ifs, mights and maybes flying around about it at the moment.

It seems like some of the indie sage lot are rolling back a bit and saying this new variant is only producing mild symptoms with the exposed so far seen in South Africa

More rolling back this morning on bbc news

Vaccines likely to be effective against variant - expert

One top South African infectious disease epidemiologist has been speaking about Omicron and what we can expect from it based on what we know so far.
Existing Covid-19 vaccines are probably effective at preventing severe disease from the newly identified variant, Prof Salim Abdool Karim said, adding that it was too early to say whether Omicron leads to more severe clinical symptoms than previous variants.

Tedros Adhanom, the WHO's director-general, is addressing a news conference in Geneva.

He insists that vaccine equity "is not charity" but is in "every country's best interest" as we look to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

"No country can vaccinate its way out of the pandemic," Dr Adhanom says.

"The longer vaccine inequity exists, the longer the opportunity this virus has to spread and evolve in ways we cannot predict nor prevent. We're all in this together."

He again urged WHO member states to commit to vaccinating 40% of the world's population by the end of 2021, and 70% by mid-2022.

Dr Adhanom said 103 countries have yet to meet the first target, with more than half at risk of missing it by the end of the year.

This is largely because they cannot access vaccines, he said.

Dr Adhanom added that only one in four health workings in Africa has been vaccinated, saying: "This is unacceptable."
"Vaccines save lives, but they do not fully prevent infection or transmission. Supressing transmission remains essential."

He said the WHO does not mean lockdowns, "which are a last resort", but a series of measures to prevent spread of the disease.

Dr Adhanom went on to describe the pandemic as "a crisis of sharing".
