I tend to do it in fits and starts. My most memorable was when I won a state of the art vacuum cleaner when I lived in a bedsit that was approx 5 square metres... my landlord happened to be around when it was delivered and thought I had lost the plot! I flogged it a few days later, lets just say the buyer got a bargain!

I used the prize finder when I first started comping. Different sites suit different people, so its a case of trying them and finding which you prefer. Rather than listing them all, have a read here:

Thanks for this sounds like some good alternatives to prize finder. I’ve nver won anything even though I’ve entered a number of competitions. Do you think opting into their marketing helps when entering a competition? I always opt out

How about entering competitions that are closing soon? That doesn’t seem to have worked for me

The only place that it may make a difference is on social media. The last minute entries will usually be at the top and if the promoter doesn't pick randomly, then you just might have a better chance. On standard web comps, I don't think it makes much if any difference when you enter.

I think it depends. I randomly did some comps on the stylist and emerald street and ended up winning but I was religiously doing all these sites for a while and got nothing! Still this thread has revived my desire!

I think the key to winning anything is consistency and routine. You are more likely to lose that you are to win so you need to enter a lot. I probably do close to 3000 entries in a week. I personally use Loquax to find competitions as I like the way they organise the competitions.

I do those ending the next day, the magazine dailies and the goodreads giveaways in that order. I only do them when I have time so not all of them get done every day. Most of my wins have come from the magazine dailies but I win something at least once a week when I'm being consistent. Yet to win the dream holiday or the huge cash prize though!

I think goodreads is a good shout because there are lots of opportunities. Just received an email today saying I won my first book! Can’t wait to read my prize!

I enter lots of competitions and do very well. To date, I have won £285 and 281 bags of Doritos on the current Win £500 a day promotion running until 16th April. I cannot believe how easy this is just to enter a code. I think the trick is at what time you enter!!

Any 2021 updates to this? Where does one start with competitions these days?

There are quite a few different competition listing sites out there that are free and safe to use. They are all slightly different and its a case of finding the one that suit you best. I use Twitaculous, which is purely for Twitter competitions, Loquax and the competition database. There are others as well. Have a read here for links and more info: https://superlucky.me/list-uk-competition-websites/

Amazing, thank you. Will bookmark that and get going! With the Twitter thing, and social media competitions in general do you use your real personal accounts? If I did that I think I'd rather use dedicated 'competition accounts' to maintain focus and not annoy my friends too much. Would you recommend this?

I use my personal accounts. It is against Facebook rules to have more than one account and you risk losing both if you get caught. I share to a public group on FB, so my friends don't see the comping posts on my timeline. (You can set up your own public group, or find a competition sharing group) Twitter and Instagram don't mind you having more than one account.
