I'm subscribed to Freecycle and there's a person that regularly asks for:

any old non-working/broken electrical items for parts... I'm looking for any non-working old electrical items for spare parts. Broken/damaged radios CD/dvd players, old video recorders, old style TVs Pc etc. Required for their components- resistors, capacitors, diodes etc.

Can't see why someone would hunt for used components when you could buy new fairly cheap. I'm thinking the person wants to get the appliances for free, rip out the electronics, and then sell the electronics to recyclers for cash. Just wondered if anyone on here had any experience of doing this?

There are videos on youtube about it. It looks a bit involved for some of the materials such as gold and platinum, but with some research there could be good money in it.

I'm working my way through a bunch of youtube videos on this. It seems the stages are 1. get hold of electrical/electronic kit, 2. strip out anything that contains precious metals, 3. refine to extract just the precious metals. Getting a regular supply of old electrical/electronic kit is where it all starts and why that Freecycle chap was asking for them. Stripping off the components would be ok for me, I'm not that keen on messing with chemicals - obvious hazards and then the disposal. I'll look more into this but I saw a company that buys stripped components.
