Hi
Since start of January I have had no new subscribers. I did get a few when I was running competitions but sadly a few left after they did not win!

Can anyone provide with a good way of getting new subscribers to my blog www.overthehillandundertheradar.com. I generally blog about helping women over 50 with topics inclduing job hunting.

I was thinking of contacting similar blogs to do guest posts.

Any advice would be welcome

Thank you
Gerri

Guest posts is a good way to getting eyeballs on your blog but with newsletters the usual thing is do is to have a popup on your blog that let people out their email address in to subscribe

Thank you. I seem to be having getting a pop up for registration for some reason. I do have a contact form.
I will look at guest posts.

Are you wanting to have the newsletter to get your readers to click your affiliate links or is there another reason for the newsletter?

I did start to get some but they seem to have now dried up. I think doing the free prize draws meant I did get subscibers but maybe for the wrong reason as a few do unscribe after a while and I think my posts are interesting!

If you want to write for The Money Shed blog and can skew some content around money a bit 'the important of saving even later in life etc' then I'm happy to take a guest post from yourself ;)

I find the pop ups to subscribe a bit off putting -- but maybe it's just me. Before I started blogging, I only ever subscribed if something I wanted was being offered. As @gerri.spiers has pointed out, this usually leads to un-subscriptions later. So I try to put myself in a normal readers shoes and do specific mailing lists too (like I have one for my meal plan series). It is slightly more time consuming but at least they are getting content they want to see. So far no one has unsubbed yet.

Tell me about it - all the plugins which provide the service all proudly state we don't annoy visitors as they don't require an extra click to remove - a visitor can continue to move to another website without dismissing them and they only popup when a visitor is about to leave your website. Plus they 'increase subscribers'.

But they don't factor in that this is based on what your mouse does and sometimes moving your mouse towards the top navigation is enough to trigger them and then they get in the way of the navigation! Doh!

Newsletter Popups are enough to drive me from your site!!!

I wonder if it is worth broadening your target audience a bit. I am a former nurse and never went through the phase of feeling I was unemployable. The difficulty was actually retiring. I felt your blog was specifically aimed at unemployed 50 year old clerical workers. I am sure it is an important niche but I am not sure how much that would appeal to advertisers.

I've just had a look and I would say some of it is very niche and some of it is more general stuff about Interviews / CVs etc.

You're sort of damned if you do and damned if you don't with blogging. Make everything 'too' general/lifestyle and you won't get noticed. Make something too niche and it can be hard to get new eyeballs however the eyeballs you do get on your site tend to be very well engaged!

As a side note you blog @gerri.spiers still isn't https and is coming up as an insecure connection in Chrome each time I visit it. You need to get a SSL Cert installed to fix that plus Google rank unsecured websites lower!
