Hey guys.

So as the title suggests - Is it possible to have a successful (Income earning) blog without social media marketing.

Just curious, that's all! - Never been a huge fan of social media.

Thanks

Nate

Yes you can just get traffic through backlinks on other sites to yours and of course people finding your content through googling for whatever keywords you are writing about

Thanks Jon.

Do successful blogs usually stick to one main topic?
Is it harder/worthwhile if you have a small handful of topics in one blog?

Nope not at all - more subjects you cover the more audience you can attract

It's funny. Most blogging guides I've read state you MUST niche down, yet several posters here disagree with that. How confusing!

Parenting blogs cover a HUGE amount of topics, same with 'lifestyle' etc. Both can be hugely successful if the content you are producing is different to everyone elses

I get 70% of my traffic through organic search. I think it takes longer to build up traffic that way and you have to learn SEO. Google keeps you in a sandbox for a couple of months so don't expect immediate results. I make some money through links and sponsored posts. My blog is aimed at older readers who are not massive social media users.

Just throwing this idea out there....

The so-called gurus advise that people are more likely to buy from you if they feel that they know, like and trust you. I would have thought that being active on social media is a good way to build up the trust factor - prove that you are a real person etc. You can have a popular website without social media, but I do wonder if being active on social media channels, including YouTube, can help if you have a site where you want to gain people's trust / prove to them that you know what you are talking about etc so they will follow your advice/buy from you.

True, but social media is a slog and takes so much time, time which I could use to make rich content. I'm with the OP on this one, I'm going to start my new blog within 3 months and try to go organic. At least I'll be doing what I enjoy and love rather than the stress of keeping up with social media and the "competition" in the blogosphere.

Nice. Be cool to hear the updates
I have a cousin who runs an independent optician and he turned one of his customers into his Facebook Assistant. Well, she started to manage his page for fairly cheap rate, and she manages quite a few sites. A bit like those virtual receptionists that take calls for 100s of companies. That, I may consider. Or ask a youngun from your extended family, for pocket change and equally, it would be something that could do wonders for their CV, customer service skills, entrepreneurship skills and general money and work experience.
