Sadly, my expenses come to more than £1k but thank you.

Hi,
I am looking at doing last year's tax return and I am wondering what I can pass on as a legitimate expense. I didn't earn that much and since it was my first year tutoring, I have incurred a lot of set-up expenses. I also am doing some CPD courses. Can I claim tax relief on these?
By CPD, I mean that I am doing dyslexia training but I am a qualified teacher. Does this imply retraining or CPD?
Thanks,
Sian
As always - claim your home expenses

Any equipment you've bought (laptop, microphone, office desk etc.)

The course - was it to help your sole trader business? If yes then I would put that through but you can always check with HMRC via their live chat if you want to double check it.

@try2belucky brought up the issue of making tax digital which will require tax returns to be returned digitally every quarter via compatible software. I think it applies from 2024 for small businesses/freelancers etc. I knew nothing about this and wondered if anyone else had any thoughts or what software/apps are most useful for us. I don't think I earn enough to worry about it yet but I think it is only a matter of time before everyone will be migrated to this system.

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on developments. I'm going to be doing my return in the next 7 days as I had a reminder from HMRC today.

I am going absolutely crazy trying to submit self assessment. I haven't done it for years but I cannot access my old SA account. I have been trying since October to get help with this and when I've tried to phone, I get told they can't help or I've had the phone put down on me.

As I can't access my old SA account, I can't link it to my PAYE account, which I can access. I've tried to create a new account but cannot get verified for this even though I enter the exact information that's on my passport, P60 and driver's license.

I actually don't know what else to do. I don't owe much and I certainly don't want a huge fine.
