CAMBLY:
I thought I would share another online teaching gig after seeing the blog Jon posted the other day.
As a matter of fact, I actually work for Education First (EF) in the adult department and highly recommend them.

This company is called “Cambly” they offer conversation practise with native speakers to English learners. They provide the video platform, the students and also quite a lot of teaching material.
Unlike EF, Cambly do not require tutors to have any teaching qualifications or experience. All you need is a good grasp of the English language and be comfortable and confident speaking with students. Start with basic ice-breakers get some basic information from them and just keep the conversation flowing. If the same student keeps coming back focus on topics that interest them, news stories, movies, sports, read a book together or make dialogues for everyday tasks. (doctors, restaurant, etc)
The payment isn’t brilliant but it’s a useful side gig to be able to fall back on.

The Basics: The students are primarily adults calling to practice their conversational English via video chat. There is also a text box and a translation tool that are very helpful. The students range anywhere from complete beginners to fluent speakers that just want to keep their skills intact. Most of the time it is up to you to keep the conversation flowing, but for beginner students or really serious students, Cambly does have lessons in their “library” that you can use. You can also use any internet teaching materials you find online and share with your students. It’s very open to your own teaching/tutoring style. You literally get students from all over the world, so it’s pretty interesting in that sense. I’ve learned a ton about other cultures.

It’s a totally flexible schedule and can you change it daily. You can work 14 hours straight, or not work at all for a month, you have total control. You can just sign on and start taking calls within minutes or sign up for “Priority Hours” which guarantee you that you will get paid for a minimum of 15 minutes of that hour. If you are on Priority Hour, you are required to answer every call that comes in. During PH’s, the computer system fields more calls your way, than if you were to just sign on and wait. There is also a reservation system where you can open slots for your new or regular students to talk with you. If a student no shows, you get paid for 10 minutes of the talk time, and you can also take calls from other students while you wait (the system notifies you that your reservation is calling in if you are on another call).

Pay rate: $10.20 per hour max. You are paid per minute that you talk at the rate of $0.17 a minute.

The Good: You are paid weekly (every Monday) in USD, into PayPal and the company pays for all transaction fees. The scheduling allows for total freedom to work whenever you want. It’s a great side gig for when you have empty hours to fill. I know a few people that do it full time and only do reservations and love it. They get completely booked and never have to worry about dealing with new students or trial students. The internet requirement is also very low… so you can basically work anywhere in the world as long as your WIFI is good enough to video chat. It is also 24/7, which is a rare find in the world of online tutoring.

The Bad: You can get some students that have no interest in learning English and tend to be a bit off putting. Free trial students can be annoying, as they usually have a very low level of English and have no intention of signing up for the program, but use it more for entertainment. (You do get paid for ALL calls, even Free trial students. These are students who get a free 5 minutes to trial the platform.) The low rate of pay and lack of guaranteed pay can also be discouraging at times. Sometimes the hiring process can take a long time.

Application Process: Pretty straight forward… you fill out the form, submit a picture and a short video introducing yourself to your potential students. (This will be used on your profile when students check you out before calling… but can be changed at any time. Check YouTube for some samples.) Then you just wait to hear back. I was lucky and was hired the next day. However, I have heard that others have waited a month or more to get a response. They seem to go through hiring waves.

Requirements: Computer or laptop with a camera and microphone/ headset with mic, PayPal account. No degree or experienced required. Just a quiet working space.

If you are interested please feel free to use my referral link below to sign up.

Disclaimer – I get paid $20 for every referral who tutors at least 10 Priority Hours on Cambly.

Great op this

Can I ask how often you hit all 60 minutes of talking and get that $10.20 rate that you've mentioned above @Chrislennon1 ?

At the beginning it was hit or miss. I was maybe getting half the rate or slightly more.

As a new tutor you need to get your name /profile out there and been seen to be active. You get a lot of free trial students (5 mins) but sometimes you are lucky enough to get someone with a 30 min or 1 hour credit.

There are a lot of variables such as the number of tutors logged in, if you are using the priority hour (half rate guaranteed) number of students and time of day.
If you just log in and make yourself visible you will most likely no get any calls as tutors on the priority get priority!

Now I have 4/5 regular students who book my lessons according to my availability in my profile. As they book and are regular the income is nearly a guarantee. They usually have 2-3, 30 minute sessions a week.

Its better to use the priority hours when starting out. Get some students you like, sell yourself ( not the way you are thinking) message them after with you availability and hopefully they come back to you.

Yeah I thought there would a lot of factors. More over the number of students being dwarfed by the number of tutors signed in and then like you said, getting noticed and chosen

Yea, like most things.

The priority hours are worth doing and get the guarantee half pay, if you get more than 30 minutes of calls even better. You can download the app on your phone which allows you to check the number of tutors logged in.

In the beginning its useful to have running while doing other things and just accept calls when they come in. Sometimes you get all your students taking 30 minute sessions and at times I have had to end the conversation as I have had to go.

It took me around a month to get my regular students and they all book.

Certainly sounds interesting

I’ll sign up tomorrow and give it a bit of a road test and report back :)

Still waiting on them getting back to me. They emailed me at the weekend to say there is a backlog and it might take weeks before they are able to offer me a position

Well Cambly emailed me yesterday from out of nowhere asking me to submit a video for their 'Cambly Kids' concept and then my existing application would be fast-tracked. So I recorded that last night and submitted it so shall wait and see!

Ah, very good. The kids programme is a new concept. Working with kids can be challenging. You are more of an entertainer than anything trying to keep their attention and focus. Usually there is a pre-planned lesson to just follow, animals, colours , numbers, abc, etc.

I haven't worked on Cambly for a while now, but my other teaching avenues are drying up so might have to revert back to it myself.

That's interesting

How is the work drying up? Is it because of them recruiting too many people or are not enough people using the service?

I primarily work for companies that teach Chinese students as it`s the biggest market. Recently the Chinese government introduced new legislation that all foreign teachers need to be at least degree educated. ( I`m not)

Bit ridiculous, as they accept a degree in any field and no teaching qualification or experience.

So recently I have been trying to find some European or South American companies but finding it difficult to get a steady schedule.

I will fall back on Cambly to pick up the slack. It doesn't pay as highly as other companies just.

I work with this crowd as well. LOL. It's Chinese working with kids or adults depending or your qualifications.

You do need a certificate or qualification to teach English as a second language if you want to work on the kid's course.

The free-talk programme is much like Cambly, where you log in and accept any calls that come your way. Mostly adults. Its a self-promotion platform and if you specialise in a particular field it's also a benefit to attract students. Mostly conversation. You can set your availability in advance and take bookings.

The kid's course is dead at the minute as they are all on summer vacation (China) but come mid-September it will pick up. I haven't done much of the free talk had some students but I don't do much in the way of promoting myself.

PALFISH OVERVIEW:
Three programs:

Free Talk/Live Streams:

  • open to non-native English speakers
  • require no qualifications
  • allow you to set your own rates
  • do not require minimum hours
  • allow you to teach from your phone or tablet
  • have students of all ages

    Official Kids Course
  • earn up to $22 USD/hour
  • must be a native English speaker
  • must have a TESOL/ TEFL/ Teacher’s certificate
  • hires teachers from US, Canada, UK, Ireland, or Australia

Here is my referral/invite code if anyone is interested in signing up, would be much appreciated.
Code: dnUeBL

Hi

I thought I would resurrect this thread as I have been with Cambly and Cambly Kids for a couple of months now.
They are running a recruitment drive for Cambly Kids and you will receive a $30 bonus if you are approved to teach on there if you use my link. This is my honest opinion on Cambly.

Positives:
Weekly and prompt pay via Paypal.
No teaching qualification or experience is needed.
All of the students I have met have been lovely and it doesn't feel like work sometimes.
Very flexible working and you can work as often or little as you like. I very quickly got regulars but that is because I have a fixed schedule.

Negatives

The pay: You get paid per minute you chat and it works out at an hourly rate of $10.20 for adults and $12 for the kids. They sometimes run referrals. It is top-up money.
You only get paid for the first 10 minutes of a no-show, however, I always book myself in for guaranteed priority hours when I have reservations so I do end up chatting with somebody.
I sometimes find that you need to supplement your lessons with extra reading or games - there are lots of free resources.

Bit more information here on somebody's blog here. If anybody is interested, I am happy to answer questions.

I would be grateful if you would apply using my link and hopefully, it will help you out as much as it has helped me!

I have been out of the tutoring game for quite a while now, since the start of covid, which was probably the busiest period.
What’s it like now? Might log in and see

My hours are mostly booked - I don't get many no-shows. I only do about 8-10 hours a week though. Go for the PH and if you can get on with something else on your computer, it's ok I suppose.

I think we are lucky in our timezones in terms of availibilty.

When are the Priority hours?
The beauty of Cambly is that there are no peak hours as such. It serves a global community so you can pick up priority hours most times and days.

For priority hours, you get paid a guaranteed 15 minutes in case nobody calls you, but that has never happened to me. Sometimes, you get guaranteed for 30 minutes and on sunday nights, they offer extra pay between 18:00 and 21:00.

You can schedule your hours in advance, in which case you might get booked, or calls are diverted to you.

Seems a bit sub-par for the teacher to require no qualifications
