This looks good. The site I will probably be joining is http://www.firsttutors.com/uk/tutors.php, but I need to wait until next month to pay for my CRB check.

Yup I have hit the roadblock of the CRB check as well just now but it's not a major issue, I can get one through work

I really think I could offer quite a good service to the people wanting help on these sites

I have set my rate at £20 / hour with £15 going to me

It may be worth setting up a separate twitter account too, so you can promote yourself. That's what I plan to do when I join. What webcam does everyone use? Haven't owned one in years.

I have a Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000, husband pinched it from work but it's a good camera ;D

If be really interested to hear back from you all about how this works out for you. I've been considering offering one to one or group tutoring to a local college, but this seems a great opportunity if you can do it from home. I'd be keen to see which company is the best to work for too out of the ones mentioned.
Good luck to those trying it out first.

Am happy to update my progress on this but it's going to take 2 weeks to get my CRB check back

Heard anything Jon?

So do you do the actual tutoring from home via webcam, or do you go out and meet them?

How long do CRBs last? I got one a few years ago when I was doing youth work, does it have to be recent? It would be annoying to have to get another one.

I've been thinking of doing tutoring as well so this could be good. I have quite a bit on at the moment so I might wait to see how others get on with it...

I don't think I'm going to bother with this. I searched 'maths' and there are 21 pages of tutors. Many who are qualified teachers and have many years of tutoring experience (or so they claim)... some as low as £10 per hour. If Tutorhub take a 25% cut that's working for £7 an hour which is incredibly low for tutoring and even compared to mystery shopping.

I'm not convinced there's much opportunity to get work from this site as they have so many tutors available.

This looks really interesting.

Let us know how it all goes when you eventually get your CRB (is that DBS now) back Jon.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread...just wondered how things went with this tutorhub site or if anyone has any other recommendations for online tutoring? I am a recently qualified Primary school teacher so this is an avenue I really should be looking into, although my real-life experience in schools has put me off actual teaching for life haha!

How long have you got?! ;D I've had all sorts, chairs chucked at me, been told to 'f off' and puked on by one of the little ones. I've also had some really lovely experiences too, it wasn't all bad...

I basically feel that teaching is not a job, it is a lifestyle choice (much like working from home I suppose!). I take my hat off to teachers because the majority of those I've worked with are 100% committed to the job, often to the extent that it takes over every other aspect of their life and that is something I'm not prepared to do. It is a shame really, because there are elements of the job that I absolutely loved, but in my opinion, the pressures of teaching the way things are at the moment far outweigh everything else.

I think teachers get very little thanks for what they do and societies perceptions of the job (Loads of holidays, finish at 3pm, etc.) are so far from the reality as I'm sure you know if both your parents are teachers! Are they primary or secondary? You were not tempted to follow in their footsteps then? Did you end up getting your CRB and giving online tutoring a go?

yeah those stories are common place

As time went on my parents (who had just retired a few years ago) got less and less control over the kids and it got to the point where as the teacher you couldn't even shout at them without their parents coming in and making a complaint.

Thus the kids don't fear the teacher and the classroom is a lot harder to control

Nope sadly didn't get round to sorting out my CRB which given my current 'work from home' workload is a good thing

I would say go for it with Tutorhub and see how you get on - nothing to lose

Yep, it is certainly a challenge to manage a class full of kids and if you don't have the parents on board then you are fighting a losing battle from the start. Will provide an update if I do end up giving it a go :)

[member=1619]SarahLu[/member] I'm a qualified art and design teacher. I worked in a high school for a short while in London in between Peckham and Elephant and Castle - that finished me off, literally  We had security men that would walk the corridors in bomber jackets and with walkie talkies. It is certainly a calling and not just a job ;D

On the tutoring front - anyone had any luck?

What about in real life, tutoring?

Wow, Primary was hard enough but I can imagine it's a whole different ball game working in a high school!

I haven't done any real life tutoring either, I think it's a confidence issue with me as it feels like a lifetime since I've taught (It's actually about 18 months). Interested to hear if any others have experience of it...
