If you've been following my story you may remember that I was recently offered a commission only job as the UK sales agent for a Rotterdam based fashion jewellery designer. I decided the job wasn't for me, however, I have just been talking to the designer and he has asked me if I will help him find the right person for the job, seeing as I am based in the UK and he isn't.

The job is about getting the jewellery into UK shops so it will involve contacting retailers by phone and email and social media and in person and getting orders. There's also scope to sell the jewellery yourself.

The role will involve business trips to Rotterdam and you will also have the opportunity to get involved with helping to design jewellery for the uk market.

so it sounds like a great job, it's just a shame I'm not in the right place to take it up myself right now.

if you're interested in applying for this job or if have any questions about the job please message me.

Thanks

How can it be a "great job" when it's commission only? And is it a job, or is it self-employed? Who is paying for these business trips to Holland? How easy is it going to be to get a brand new, unproven and unknown product range from a foreign designer into independent UK jewellers?

Not for me.

it's a great job for the right person - someone with previous sales experience who is happy to work for commission only. Maybe someone who has previously worked for an mlm. Most sales agents work on a self employed basis so strictly speaking it's not a job it's a self employed role. The company pays all expenses - trips to Holland and so on. I think there is the potential for great earnings once you have established relationships with retailers and are getting repeat orders from them. But you're right there is definitely an element of risk. I agonised long and hard about whether to take this job myself I was really tempted but unfortunately I'm not currently in the right place financially where I can take a risk.

I'd be wary that after you've done all the hard work building up contacts they'd just get rid of you so you've done all the hard work for nothing. You've no real rights as self employed in this situation.

I've never worked as a sales agent before but I know people who have done this as a career and who have made a good living from it, bought houses and brought up families, so its definitely a legit job, I imagine once they find the right person some sort of contract will be drawn up

Commission only jobs are awesome! Not everyone is awesome at doing them though :(

I was reading this thing the other day, it was about people blaming things for stuff, instead of blaming the way people do stuff with things.

There are a lot of asshole companies and unscrupulous characters running sales agencies. Doesnt mean that "sales jobs" or "commission only" jobs are not good though.

You can not scale how many hours you can work for an hourly wage, but you can scale your sales.
