Hi Amy, Is there anything you have a passion for? a hobby or something you love to do?
My example is that I've always been into cars and I've been into modifying them and been through all the stages (from thinking neon kits and bonnet vents were cool to then thinking there were awful, having sound systems then stripping cars out 'rally style' and doing engine conversions!) Well after becoming pregnant with our first child I though I'd try come up with something that meant I didn't have to go back to work. I knew it had to be something I loved and car stuff was pretty much my only pastime (other than gaming!) so I though I would like to sell aftermarket car parts. I started emailing all the manufacturers of car parts I liked and even though in my email I mentioned I was a new business looking for products to sell a fair few actually replied with their business terms. I hadn't heard of drop shipping at this point but some suppliers mentioned different prices for either buying from them in bulk of for direct to customer purchases (where the customer buys from me, i send them the order and then they dispatch the order direct.
I came across a website that allowed you to build your own online store for free (
www.vstore.ca) and thought it was worth a go (I bought my web address from
www.easily.co.uk)
It wasn't instant money, sales didn't start rolling in straight away - it might have been as much as 6 months before my first sale but when it came it was amazing and more followed. I think it gets a while to get known as well. Social media wasn't big when I first started, my only advertising was through car forums (back when they didn't mind you posting links!) I've not earned a massive amount from it, no where near what I earned when I had a 'proper job' but it has meant I have been able to stay at home with the kids all these years. it has paid for several holidays and a new sofa
www.kpautomotive.co.uk is the store I created with vstore. I upgraded to their premium version when I started getting regular sales.
I recently started up a new store with opencart which I think looks a lot more modern and there is so much more you can do with it but its a bit harder to use. My new store is
www.kpautocarparts.co.uk
I have looked at 'drop ship companies' before and I didn't like a look of them. Quite a few required you to pay to be a member or buy certain amount of stuff from them. Also they all seemed to sell the same kind of thing!
I used to want to sell fancy dress costumes (another thing i love!) but I read with selling clothes then to expect a lot of returns and that's something I didn't like the sound of!
I'm not a fan of ebay at all. The fees are high and I've been ripped off a few times. Have you used ebay to sell your own things? if you are good at selling and get good prices you could try on there, but there is a lot of competition and people often sell new things for less than I can buy them at! But on the other hand a lot of people go straight to ebay when they want to buy something and if you find a niche market then you could be the only person selling that particular item.
Anyway I believe its best to have a business related to something you are really interested in because when its a bit slow or hard to get off the ground you are less likely to loose interest in it. Also its good to know about the items you are selling as people will ask questions (although you can always find the answers by asking manufactures/suppliers but its quicker if you already know the answers.
