A main road through our town has been closed. It is on a steep hill and a sinkhole opened up during rush hour. It's causing traffic chaos, but what made me smile was this comment in the local rag:

A busy main road will be closed for the ‘foreseeable future’ after a sinkhole that appeared during rush hour traffic is worse than initially thought. Workers began repairing it today and will continue trying to fix it this weekend. In the meantime they have covered the hole with a piece of wood and a wheelbarrow.

A wheelbarrow and a piece of wood? That's really going to keep people safe. You've gotta love the council's high tech solution :D

We live outside the village boundary by a mile or so and the house is set back some way from the road in a development that contains a dozen or so small business units, with ours being the only domestic dwelling. When we first moved in we contacted the council to organise them delivering the wheelie bins for recycling but they refused because of our location. Despite many phone calls, emails and letters they would not budge and we had to battle to get them to agree to collect the old-fashioned black bin bags and even then only if we take them to the main road. We asked how that was any different to taking wheelie bins to the main road but the council were adamant. We do what we can to recycle but it is a bit of a faff given the nearest recycle centre is 10 odd miles away. Sometimes we aren't as good as we could be and more goes in the black bags than would if we had the wheelie bins like everyone else.

So an envelope arrived in the post yesterday addressed to 'The Occupier' Now normally I don't bother opening these as they are usually just junk. However, I noticed this one had come from the local council so thought I better open in case it was important. Imagine my surprise when the letter said our household had won third prize in the 'It pays to recycle' draw. Now it was only a £10 shopping voucher so nothing major and you might be wondering if this should be posted in the 'What have you won' thread. Well apart from the fact we didn't know the draw existed and certainly hadn't proactively entered and given the issues with the bins described above…it made me smile!

Local councils….gotta love them hey!

We didn't manage to get to the IAT Fairford airshow which is running this weekend, but the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey just flew really low over my garden - I'm happy :)

I'll be even happier if the Red Arrows fly over later. ;D

Pokemon Go, for 2 reasons.

My 3 year old is enjoying searching for Pokemon which means we've been having some nice daddy daughter walks while looking around the local area to find things, her favourite thing is getting me to take a picture of her with the Pokemon around her then looking at the picture later.

The other one is seeing people of all ages walking around my area (outer housing area of a small town) looking for Pokemon on Pokemon Go, it's so obvious when you see someone driving or walking suddenly head closer to a Pokestop, or staring at their phone, saying "it's over there" heading towards somewhere you've just caught one, etc.

If you're on an iPhone you can create a US App Store account to download it. (which is what I did)
If you're on Android you can download the app from a different website, although there are apparently some virus filled versions around as well so it's a bit more of a risk.

The Independent released a guide on how to download it, I don't know how reputable the Android link there have there is.
