We are getting absolutely BATTERED with wind and rain up in leeds today. Took the dog out for a walk this morning and there are blocked drains EVERYWHERE so its basically like rapids of water running down roads here right now.

Seems another storm alert has come out as well

Storm Franklin is forecast to hit the UK after Storm Eunice left 1.4 million homes without power.
The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for Northern Ireland for Monday morning and yellow ones for parts of the UK from Sunday.
There is a yellow rain warning in the north west of England, where two severe flood alerts indicate danger to life.

Even worse are the ones who join the motorway and then pull immediately into the middle lane, even though they're the slowest thing on the road. And then just stay there for the next 50 miles because someone told them its the safest lane to be in.

Was on M1 today on way home and ended up behind a guy (car) doing 50mph... drove me insane!!

This hasn't pissed me off as such but It didn't seem worth starting a new thread for. So might has well stick it here.

Went food shopping in Tesco yesterday. 29th August.

Shop assistant was putting Christmas chocolates and gift boxes on the shelves!!!

I think this is one of the earliest arrivals of Christmas products I can remember. Perhaps they gave up trying to promote stuff for BBQs with the summer we've had this year.

There have been displays regarding Hallowe'en and we are still in September.

Not just today but everyday the ads for Tui holidays - well all holiday ads really.

Also not just today but several days the fake entrepreneurs grifting on YouTube like the lady who says she can teach you how to make dosh selling half empty books on Amazon etc. etc. and the bloke who plugs his (I think) investment courses from famous race course/scenic spot in Scotland etc. etc. No disrespect to genuine Amazon and ebay sellers; I know some visit this site at times though I think they are too busy with their businesses to plug courses.

The usual clincher if it's "so simple everyone can do it". Well, do YOU see everyone doing it and earning £100k a year? Nope. Absolutely boils my p*ss.

Today, I am annoyed - no, seeing red - over slow payers. Very slow payers.

I told someone if they made a decision, it would cause a problem. They then went even farther than said decision and cut the budget too. The problem has arisen. They've asked me why it has happened and even referenced me saying it would happen.
Not an adviser to the British government by any chance are you?

Your pain. I feel it.

After I posted yesterday, I had a brief email exchange with a couple of people involved in a musical organisation I've been drafted to cast my eye over due to my infamous 'disruptor skills' and their self-acknowledged tendency towards being reactionary. I advised that some changes they had had to make to upcoming events were presented simply and positively as facts, without explanation. I even wrote their marketing newsletter for them, which they were delighted with. No changes. Yes, this is how we want to present ourselves.

Two hours later, the marketing newsletter hit my inbox. Full of negatives, apologies, and barnstormingly strange explanations as to why things were as they were - real 'dog ate my homework' stuff, only with less credibility.

I withdrew my services. Positively, as a fact, and with no explanation.

That sounds maddening ED. Many years ago when I was 'temping' someone at the firm where I was assigned found* out I had a working knowledge of French and asked me to translate something. I complied. Later I learned that he'd also sent it out to a translation company for a fee - their translation was exactly the same as mine. Mind you that firm (where I was working not the translation outfit) used to pull the "this needs to go out tonight" card and Sincerely Thine who used public transport stayed late more than once (this was still in the days of snail mail) only to find the person setting the task had driven home. The only plus was that they would pay me for my time. Some places only offer time off in lieu.

* I wouldn't say my French was of a level to offer a professional translation service. The document in question though was a level where a decent working knowledge would suffice.

I get driven mad when I'm doing a survey and get kicked out when I've nearly finished. I'm not that much of a fan of surveys. However they are a way of at least getting a little pin money. Some people seem to make "okay" money doing them. Also clicking on every square which has a cycle/set of traffic lights/alien from a planet far, far away* when performing recaptcha to access activities on GPT sites also drives me nuts.

* Yes, the last one of the three alternatives is just my silliness.

I used to like Intellizoom and went back to it recently. However I find I am getting bombarded with loads of study invites everyday. Most I get screened out of so it’s extremely frustrating. I go into my account area to turn them off so I can just log in and check for studies but it looks like if you do that you don’t get any paid studies through at all! Seems ridiculous you don’t have the option to turn the notifications off from coming through to your email address and then just have them in your account to look at. They show up there anyway so they should let you choose whether to receive them through your email address or not. Testing it when I turn it off I get nothing through email but nothing showing in my account either. It used to be a good earner and I don’t remember so many emails coming through daily when I did it months ago. However I have noticed they have taken over another site called usertesting that I used to belong to so that would explain why there are loads more invites coming though than before.

Infuriating. I've been there on the 'free translator' front too - I'm a polyglot, with three languages at reasonable conversational, and another three at 'get in and out of jail' level, so I've found myself when temping (I haven't temped now in a decade) providing services that would normally contract out at three or four times the hourly rate I'm on (have you SEEN the rates for PA + a second language? Oy...). Because I'm not business fluent, I never had the front to set myself up for that. With hindsight, that's annoying in itself. I could have a much better handbag collection if nothing else.

ED I can only offer "reasonable working knowledge of" French though I did German at night school for a year in the early 1970s. I'm studying Spanish at 'consolidator' level with U3A and just a couple of weeks ago started doing sign language classes again. I did French at Birkbeck College for a couple of years in the late '70s/early '80s (you likely know it's a part-time college that is part of London University). A BA there took four years as it was part-time rather than the normal three years. I gave up halfway through as my late mother's rheumatoid arthritis deteriorated very badly so she needed looking after.

When I switched the kettle on at the socket in the kitchen this morning I felt a slight tingling in my index finger. I'm about to text an electrician to see if he might be amenable to doing the job with payment in instalments. I'm using dry rubber gloves around that socket currently. That said there are decent people. One of the from the French Conversation class I belong to is taking me to an imaging appointment to see if the tag on my forearm is just a tag or is something more ominous. The people making the appointment are in Birmingham and don't know my local area so sent me somewhere outside the town completely the opposite direction to where I live - though to be fair they gave me a quick appointment. I only saw the nurse practitioner on Tuesday last week I was on a combination of Lisiniprol and Hydrochlorazide. The H.....zide has been stopped because it carries a slight risk of non-melanoma skin cancer so I thought better get the lesion checked out.

Oh dear, is this too much information?

Goodness, no - that sounds alarming and well worth getting checked out. Hope there is nothing to worry about there. Also, might the kettle be perfectly innocent and it's still nerve damage from your wrist injury? Or is it the other hand?

Ah, Birkbeck - brings back happy memories. I've passed through there as both student at teacher at various times. Should remind them I exist. It was good fun.

It's the socket switch not the kettle switch which made my finger tingle ED. I've looked the fault up on the internet and the forums (fora?) I read said get it checked out ASAP. I have put out feelers regarding repairs though no-one has returned my messages. The wiring is from 1971 (I'm in my late parents' house). I'm wondering whether I should throw in the towel vis-a-vis looking for work (unless I can find offline work) and see if I could claim pension credit. At one time there was a scheme where the Council would help with issues on houses on the understanding they would get recompensed at any house sale following the occupant's death. That would be my last choice - my brother has a half interest in the house though he and his wife live in London. Of course some Council schemes - like the Government's ideas on net zero - have evaporated post-pandemic.

That's a co-incidence that you went to Birkbeck. Isaac Rosenberg the war poet went there I remember being told (English was my subsidiary subject.

If the house electrics haven't been touched since 1971 then the whole thing probably needs re-wiring. Switch gear will wear out over time so its likely over sockets and light switches will need attention soon too.

Does it still have the old type fuse board with the pull out fuses?

The fuse board dates from the 1980s homie but there is a newer form of fuse board that has come in since then.

ED, homie et al. After having 24 hours to think on matters I've thought the CAB might at least be able to give me some advice.

I had an ad pop up on YouTube telling the viewer he/she can earn loads of money teaching what they already know. Someone would have difficulty teaching something unknown to him/her wouldn't he/she?
