What is it that makes people give up on earning online / working from home?

I think working from home could work for me. I don't need that much social interaction. It's just a matter of figuring out the regular income streams. Once the money starts coming in it will be less scary but this early phase of applying for things and trying different ways of making money but not seeing any returns can be off putting. I can see why people might give up if they have an alternative. This is my only option at the moment so I have to make it work.

If you don't want to rely on other companies for work so much why don't you setup your own site and earn income through that?

Yeah I wouldn't mind trying that but it's coming up with a good idea for a site.

Some people lack the motivation to actually work FULL TIME from home.

One of the most irritating things I find about working from home is the stigma that you don't actually work. I make a full time wage from home, and I work hard to get it. Long hours, throughout the night, and as someone else has already mentioned, when I'm down for 40 hours p/w I actually work for those 40 hours. Another one that bugs me is when people think you can't possibly be working on a computer at home. I have no idea how that makes sense, as it's no different whatsoever than me driving to a building that's not my home, sitting down in a very similar chair, and logging on to a very similar computer.

I don't get paid if I go off to have a 15 minute break, and I don't get paid for sick days, holidays etc. It's a tough gig working from home, and although it's more challenging than any other "real world" job I've had, it definitely has it's benefits.

I have had this for many years. I think a lot of people think I am making it up and I dont actually work! When I try to introduce people to web search evaluation or call centre work (the two main things I have done from home) they think it some kind of scam, just because its done from home. :-\

There is a huge stigma around it and that does put people off.

Yep, this is very irritating. I mainly get this from my parents, who don't seem to take me working for 63336 seriously at all despite it being a 15 hour a week contract. I get the odd snide comment such as me "not having to get up for work tomorrow like the rest of us" to which I have to remind them that I AM working tomorrow ::)
