What I won't do to save money?

I love theatre, cinema and cultural events, I am never going to stay at home and only watch Netflix. However, I am happy to take my own snacks and find deals on tickets!

Flask of tea - I just can't be bothered. If its a 'long' journey then there will be a 'bio-break' at some point and I can usually pick up a tea from the services.

Sandwiches - I KNOW it is cheaper, better, etc. I just can't be bothered. I don't like making sandwiches the night before (18 hours before eating them!) so I never do.

Android - I just didn't get on with it. And I have tried.

Aldi/Lidl - I know they are cheaper. But I also like having time to pack my bags, a big selection of things and more than 1 till open at a time.

Car Sharing - True Story. I once bought a car rather than car-share. I want to be master of my own (driving) destiny.

Present Limits - Appart from office secret Santas I've not been asked to take part. I will also buy people a present I think they'll love. If it costs £50,£5 or 50p...I think they'll love it I'm buying it.

2 for £9.99 - Take off 20% VAT and you are at £8. Divide by 2 thats £4 a meal. £4 to buy, cook and serve. Its not going to be high quality at that price. Thats not to say I've not had shit expensive pub meals but I'd rather take the chance of a more expensive meal being shit than have a shit meal, that costs 'nothing' be shit.

(edited)

To add. I do live in London, I don't have a Lidl/Aldi here, there are very few pubs with 2 for £10 deals, No-one drives near me to my office, I'm never more than 50 yards from a costa/starbucks, and android will always be rubbish! (just kidding - I really didn't get on with it)

With the depends on circumstances there are reasons.

The sandwiches one is because I work for an agency I don't always know where I will be. Sometimes a place to buy food will be 10 -15 minutes away and with half an hour lunch that's not possible. The alternative is a school dinner!! Also I make them before I leave not the night before.

Car sharing tends to be more for events than day to day - away football matches if we don't go by coach and conferences down South. Liverpool to Brighton/Bournemouth is a long drive and I would rather get through Birmingham before stopping.

Presents - this is normally when friends have less money than usual. If they ask fora limit I don't want to embarrass them by spending more than agreed - a £1 or so over is fine obviously.

I have never had trouble with Aldi not having many tills open and as I go to other shops, the limited supply is never a problem.

The meal deals may serve me better as being veggie the options within the price range are better.

Slightly off topic, but any casino deal involving bonuses on Starburst. No thanks!!! (Hate that game..)
Yeah that’s game is the pits but more so because of how annoyingly boring it is to play!

I do always take carrier bags (and always have one in my boot for emergencies), but that is more of an environmental guilt thing than a money saving thing. I already did that years before they introduced the charge.

I just can't be bothered to keep changing bank and/or savings accounts to get a better deal. I don't like admin and don't want to faff around with it or deal with all the extra bank statements I have to keep for X years for the sake of a few quid a year. I have banks/savings places I like and I will stick with them!

This is me! I have a boot full of carrier bags that will never see the light of day again. Also just had the AA renew at twice the price of what I originally signed up for 2 years ago. Have ranted to everyone about it. Will I do anything about it - NO.

Fakeaways! I don't think I will ever stop wanting a proper take-away once a fortnight, and fakeaways are just not the same, no matter how much money I save doing it.

I'm probably about to be boo'd out of the forum for this second one, but cash back sites. I do not really get them, I haven't made a penny off TopCashback, and now I'm probably going to go back to normal shopping...

@The Reverend

Your list is hilarious. I personally get on fine with Android phones and I pretty much cook every single day but that's because I have children and don't want them to eat crap! I also take my own cloth bag shopping but more for environmental reasons.

There is a level of 'tongue in cheek'ness in my posts! :D

I also cook from fresh every-day. I just can't be bothered making sandwiches.

There is a certain logic to this somewhere. I just haven't worked out where it is yet

This topic has had me in stitches, proper belly ache laughter.

I do nearly everything on the lists that say “ No thank you”

As for the no spend days, I’ve got to do from now until the end of February, about 45 days in a row, good job I take my coffee without milk or sugar.

It doesn't have to be sandwiches though, does it?. I take a pasta salad to work almost every day (3 days per week). I don't need to, but it's a hangover from the days when I had just bought my first house (25 years ago!) and was short of money. I probably only buy pre-packaged sandwiches only 10 days per year. I couldn't calculate how much I've saved over the years!

I always try to take a bag to the shops with me but mostly out of guilt than saving money, plus less of an issue food shopping but when clothes shopping it irritates me when the total is £20.10p when paying for a bag.

I am not very good a booking basic hotels, I will try to find the best deal on my hotel (usually mid-range) but don't ever book the cheap value hotel. I also spend extra on flights instead of going with a budget airline.

Do you not find that nospenddays only work because you've purchased enough food BEFORE doing them so you have enough to live off so really you are just spending the same amount of money in the long run

That’s true and I’ve always got lots of food well stocked even though I’m not a fan of cooking.

This time I’ve no choice to have no spend days as I don’t have any physical cash spare. I will be running down my freezer and cupboards.

See that's why I think it's always a false economy as like I said the same amount of money gets spent regardless

If you do 10 no spenddays in a row
you would pre buy a load of food before that
use the food during the 10 days
and then buy a load of more food afterwards as you have nothing left!

Agreed. My following no spend days are good timing for me as I'm extra well stocked at the moment because Christmas wasn't long ago. I won't suffer but I will miss out on many bargains.

This thread is funny to read.

Gotta admit that I'm a thrifty kinda guy.

I'm the dude that gets free coffee from bookie shops as well as taking money off them :)

Also,
- Shop at Lidl - Yes!
- Take carrier bags with me - yes!
-
But I wouldn't scrimp on grub cos I'm a greedy so and so.
Also wouldn't save on travelling or holidays if I wanna go somewhere.

Dunno how some of these frugal peeps do wombling. Picking up other people's receipts etc. But each to their own.

If you like the coffee you get in bookies you should do a run round of casinos near you where you not only get hot drinks given to you for free but also sandwiches (at least in Leeds!)
