Probably not the best time to ask this question as Kristian is away but when do you monetise your blog/site?

Which affiliate/ad programs can you sign up for when your site is new - which ones require to to meet a certain criteria?

Do you need lots of content on the website to start with and have it live for a certain amount of time before monetising?

Just a few questions that I can't remember if they've been answered before or not...

I believe that if you do it too early you will put off new viewers

Which, let's face it is all you have at the start!

I agree

You need traffic AND trust and that can take a little time to build both

Maybe focus more on marketing in the first few months to generate that traffic

It's a long game with all this stuff....

Adsense on sites and blogs doesn't seem to be that productive and can be more of a distraction to any new visitor. Most of my revenue to date comes via short You Tube videos that I've monetized and will probably continue in that way.

There's a member on this platform who makes decent revenues (£400pm) on You Tube and has a few superb animated videos.

I am interested

What do you think is the best way to generate income on a forum that isn't disruptive to the end user experience?

Decided just to add amazon associates cos I couldn't see any harm in it. I'm trying out a widget on the right hand side of the website - does it look alright? http://diggingandcrafting.com/

Looks good

Tried it on ipad and laptop and it's fine on both

How are the earnings coming? I know each month you have to probably start on a minus because of your WA payments but hopefully soon each month you will be able to earn more than that

That's what I hope, I've only just starting posting this week and the amazon links have gone on today so no earnings yet, also according to google analytics I'm pretty sure that all my traffic so far has come from me posting on here ;)
I'll just keep posting, I know it'll be slower than Kristian as he was posting every day where as I'm aiming for 3 times a week at least - so the google rank climbing will be slower.

Only way is UP is one way to look at it

The one thing about monetising blogs is it can take quite a while for the money to come rolling in.

Time needs to be spend building those backlinks and what not

Yeah :) and as I said the other day I've felt a lack of sense of achievement lately and each time I complete a blog post it fills that hole a little bit - it will be even better when I start getting referral sales.

What is it you are planning to sell and make money from?

Can you sell access to minecraft servers or something?

Mostly the console versions of the game and merchandise - there's a lot of it around. There are some servers hosts that offer affiliate programs though

-random tangent- There's been a big blow up over the monitising of minecraft servers recently since Mojang has decided to properly enforce their EULA - its mostly servers that were charging for 'pay to win' items in the game. I think the nub of it was Mojang were fed up with complaints blaming them for children spending £100's on digital items when it was nothing to do with them. I didn't read into it too much because it didn't affect me, it has greatly affected the community in general leaving large server owners struggling to make their costs as they are now mostly relying on 'donations' -tangent over-
