Who should I vote for in the local elections?

I never thought that I would ever consider voting UKIP in any election (not even milk monitor!)

However, I have a serious dilemma.

The Labour/Lib Dem council are proposing a crazy red-route scheme for my local area that has huge opposition. They carried out a pathetic consultation exercise with digital plans that were impossible to understand (landmarks not included for easy reference) and a questionnaire that was badly worded and "loaded" in their favour.

Now, the problem is that the person leading the opposition to the red route is standing as a UKIP candidate for the local elections and he seems to be the only candidate opposing the red route.

Can I fall back on the principle that we vote for people and not parties in the UK and scribble out the UKIP part next to his name? or does that spoil my ballot paper? :( ::) ??? :-[ :'( :-\

Yes that will spoil the paper. (At least as a counter we put them in the spoiled pile the someone takes a look at them after we've done our bit)

UKIP were elected in our area in the last vote and they haven't done anything terrible!

I think in local elections you should vote for the person you think will do best for your area not necessarily the party.

Is it against the law to photograph your own completed ballot paper and post it on Facebook? I'm not going to do this, but presumably not allowed to use recording devices of any sort at polling stations?

I have seen some really good spoiled papers over the years.

Usually with swearing and what not written all over it

My son ages 24 has suddenly taken a great interest in politics and has engaged in a lot of healthy debate over the last couple of weeks. Its been great to see, there's nothing quite like the arrogant confidence of the young :) However my 18 year old daughter is finding it all very confusing and has declared she's voting green as its her favourite colour. I kid you not ;D

Green is my favourite colour too lol I'm 25 and I find the whole thing confusing! In the past I've just not voted because I thought that no vote was better than a random misinformed one.
Last time I did vote but not sure if I want to go the same way again :/ may just vote anything as a vote for anything else is one against UKIP!

See I've always looked at it as a spoiled vote is best if you don't know who to vote for, if you just don't vote then it looks like you just can't be bothered.

I can't see any reason why you can't photograph your own ballot paper. Surely its no different than telling everyone who you voted for. (i've not worked in a polling station so don't know the rules. It's never really crossed my mind!

FYI - there were signs at the polling station saying "switch phones off" and "no photography".

I have to say I find the BBC website very clumsy and difficult to use to find out any meaningful information about individual results.

I'm totally knackered from last night.

All we were doing was counting to make sure the right number of ballots were in the boxes but that still took till 2am. I got just under 4 hours sleep as I had to get up for the kids at 6:30am. So glad I wasn't working today!
