I’m wondering why people on this forum begin blogging, is it for the fun or making money?

I came up with a small guide for the struggling money makers here.

A key element of blogging is establishing your goal and how you’ll reach that goal. I see a lot of people start a blog based on their day-to-day lives which is great, but when they come to monetize their blog they become stuck.

When it comes to blogging, before you begin, you need to research a specific niche you’re interested in and the methods available for monetization. You then need to come up with a plan as to how and when you’re going to make money, ignoring this step will leave you with a nice blog but little money since not every niche is monetizable.

As an example, I could start a blog based on dog training. I’d create a blog which would be updated every Tuesday and Thursday, these updates communicated via Facebook, Twitter and email. The content would comprise of dog training such as house training a dog, basic commands, taking care of your dog etc. Alongside that, I’d create a high-quality product, an ebook, video series, audio guide, whatever is compatible with that niche which I’d sell for around £25.

The way this works is the high-quality content of the blog attracts new readers/subscribers as well as builds a relationship with current customers/readers/subscribers. The more readers/subscribers come to trust you through quality blog content the more money they’ll spend with you in the future.

Making good money with blogs comes down to building relationships with visitors and selling either your own or affiliate products. You could try AdSense or selling advertising spots, but you’d have to get a hell of a lot of consistent traffic for these methods to make a noticeable amount of money.

Just food for thought.

I use my blog purely as a means of keeping all of my musings in one place. If people want to read it, great. If they don't, I'm not really bothered.
If I don't post for a month or more, I don't worry about it. I enjoy what I write, and treat it as just a fun thing to do that maybe a few people out there will enjoy.
Making money from a blog is hard work and relentless, especially in the early days. I really do take my hat off to those that do well.

I blog for 2 reasons.

1) to help people financially

2) to provide an additional income stream for myself

I blog mainly to help people and to express myself. IF I reach enough people I may consider monetising at some point in the future but that's not one of my primary motivations at the minute. I think one of the hinderances to blogging more is finding the time to do it to be honest so I take my hats off to anyone who manages it on a consistent basis alongised all of life's other challenges!

I bought a domain name yesterday with a view to sharing my experience and knowledge of cyber security. Hoping to monetise it later on but for now it will be informational. Time to get writing!

I can think of about 1000 workplaces that have ICT teams that would read INDEPENDENT blogs like that!

It's a big growth industry and a fantastic niche to get into!

Thanks Jon.

Content will not be a probable but any suggestions on how to approach this would be very welcome along with anything else I should be doing to drive traffic to my site.

I'd say repeat every step in that again and again - purely because there are so many better ways of doing things that come along. For example, if smartwatches take off will that mean we have to redesign blogs/websites to be readable on a smartwatch? Or create smartwatch specific content? The possibilities are endless and therefore so are the opportunities to make money if you can be flexible and adopt early to new opportunities!

If you want a suggestion for content than from an ICT security perspective one of the blogs I'd go with would be 'is wearable technology secure?'

Up until now I've been active on LinkedIn, Twitter (a little bit on Facebook) but should I be using others?

Nope, software these days is responsive out of the box.

Ever notice how when you use TMS on smartphone it fits perfectly, same goes for the blog. The software detects the device you are reading the scales everything appropriately

I do - I was more coming from the perspective though that no one is going to want to read a long blog entry on their watch! So content may need to be shorter and snappier to appeal to that market.

Should I start posting articles now (along with the standard site information i.e. About Me, News, Contact etc?) ,or should I wait until I have a few articles ready to go?

How long does it take you to create new content? And are you going to have lulls where you won't be able to create any. If it's going to take a while for you create content or there's going to be long gaps where you won't have any available I'd wait until you've got the content in place. Otherwise I'd say go for it now!

Is this actually going to be a blog or a website with articles?

Articles for the time being but I'm thinking that with the amount of cyber incidents and new technology I should comment more regularly - which I currently do weekly (sometimes twice weekly) via LinkedIn and Twitter.

Business cards arrived yesterday for the cyber security site so need to start generating content. Any suggestions for platforms or tools that will allow me to do this quickly would be appreciated. I'm not a coder so just need something that will get the site up fairly quickly.

I also bought another domain which I plan to inform people how they can safely invest in the stock market while minimising risk. A lot of people are risk averse I think and simply don't know how to do this so hopefully my site will help demystify this. It's something I've been interested in for the past 10 years and through my own experience I've started to make decent steady returns. I've lost some money through this experience which initially is difficult to accept, but over time you get use to this feeling and learn to cut your losses.

Looking into blogging and online marketing are any of you video blogging? what's your experience of this. This seems to be an increasing trend.
