This is driving me mad at the moment.

These are the errors I enjoy seeing if I use chrome to look at blogs which are still http instead of https

Google have said since 2014 that they give you a boost if your site has a SSL Certificate installed - https://searchengineland.com/google-starts-giving-ranking-boost-secure-httpsssl-sites-199446

For both Kloudhost and Vidahost it's simply a case of logging into your hosting cpanel and doing a one click function and your site becomes secure and then you can just run one of the simple plugins for Wordpress like Really Simply HTTPS to make your site secure - JOB DONE!

GET ON IT BLOGGERS!!!

I've just tried it on Vidahost and its not 1-click for install. I've got to contact admin. :)
Should be to install LetsEncrypt which is the Free SSL solution I used (use)

You've mentioned this to me before but admittedly I didn't really understand what it meant! I'm with Vidahost too so will contact them for help in doing this :).

this is super important both for yourself and for your visitors. Although just a word of caution for you all in terms of when you are visiting websites yourselves, it is possible to spoof a secure website so don't just look for the s also look for the padlock. And finally before you click on a link hover over it until you get the mouse pointer and then in the bottom left you will see where it is going to take you. Again pay attention because fraudsters are clever and they bet on the fact that faced with https://barcllays.com etc that you will not notice the extra l and you will just click anyway.

This had bugged me for ages too, I didn't know you could get the cert and have this altered. Does it disappear once you leave the host provider (or is that an incredibly dumb question)?
I'm with Vidahost (up until April at least) so I'll get on it now - thank you!

It depends. Most host providers will offer it one way or another, such as Vidahost who offers you it free for something like 3 months then they have to renew it for you. But when you move your new host will more than likely offer it too, I know SiteGround did when I moved from Vidahost.

You do have the option of paying for one which is around the £40-60 mark per year (I think - @katykicker should know as she bought her's originally) and that should travel with you.

There is no harm in getting it now and then reactivating it when/if you switch to a new host.

It will travel with you.

The SSL is bought on the domain, not the hosting company

Interesting - I feel so totally inept with this whole blog jazz when stuff like this comes along. Thanks for the info & tips @Chammy much appreciated! :)
If you are with Vidahost you should be able to set up LetsEncyrpt with them for free as that's where I got my certificate from

IT does indeed travel. I spent about £50 on mine *eyeroll* with fucking Go Daddy.

I've moved to Siteground and it expires in a few days, so going to have to see what I need to do about that I suppose.

I hated, absolutely hated, moving my host provider last year, it was such a palaver! No way I was going to stick with who I was with (can't even remember now, thankfully) as they were charging a fortune after the introductory year offer. Any ideas who you'll go with next, @katykicker ? I'm with Vidahost at the moment who have been pretty decent so far, no problems to report.

I am also with Vidahost and have to say I’m happy with the service and the renewal price I recently had I was happy to pay. I think it was just the domain name, I do need to check what my hosting costs will be.

I’ve never had any issue with their support team and I’ve used them quite a bit.

:)
