OK, I am putting it out there, I am a woman on a mission to earn an extra £500 a month!!!!

As some of you already know, my partner and I have been plagued by low wages and underemployment for years and it is killing us. After another big row about money during which my partner threatened to leave (I don't think he will but still, not good) we have come to the conclusion that if one or both of us could only earn an extra £500 a month (or at a push £400) on top of what we are already earning (currently I have a part time job and a business selling fashion jewellery and my partner works for a supermarket) it would make such a difference.

As I pay for treats and clearing debts, an extra £500 a month in my pocket would mean I could put half towards clearing debt, which would clear the debt a lot faster than we are doing now, we're not really clearing it at all at the moment, which would in turn take some of the pressure off us, and then we could use the other half for things like nights out, which I think are important, to stop us going completely crazy - these last few months, we have had zero money to spend on nights out and we have both been very miserable as a result!

Another £500 in my partner's pocket would mean we could start spending a little more on food and actually have some money left over for things like clothes and haircuts and shoes and birthday presents and works nights out and that kind of thing, and again, this would I think massively improve our sense of wellbeing and take a lot of the pressure off us.

It doesn't seem like a lot to ask for really and yet it seems so impossible to achieve, in our most recent bout of job hunting, we've both been looking for over a year now, but we are clever people and we should be able to do this!

The problem seems to be that every time one of us earns a little bit more money by either changing jobs (me) or by working more hours (my partner) it gets snatched right back by the government either in taxes or cuts to benefits, so every time you think you are starting to get somewhere you end up right back where you started only worse off really because now you are working longer hours but still not seeing the benefit.

But eventually you have to get to a point where they can't take any more off you (according to the cab this is when you get to a joint income of around £23k)

We are both people who were brought up to believe that if you work hard, you will be rewarded, right now it feels like we are working hard but not being rewarded at all for it but I suppose you just keep working hard in the hope that eventually you will be rewarded, if that makes any sense?!

In other news, after much wrangling with the council, we are now on the waiting list for housing, and to my surprise, despite all the scare stories, it does actually look like we might be in with a chance of actually being offered something, so that is a big weight off my mind. So anyone who is in the same situation as we are, struggling to afford the rent in private rented accommodation, definitely apply, and don't be put off by all the scare stories.

So, on with the job hunting! As long as it's something I can do which fits around my daughter's school hours (8-4 weekdays) I don't really care whether it's at home or outside the home, whether I have to give up or keep my current part time job, or even what it is really, if it can net me an extra £500 a month! Obviously nothing illegal or immoral! I'll be steering clear of mlms but I'm happy to work for commission only if I'm sure it will pay me the money I need to earn. So if anyone comes across anything, please pass it on!!!!

Good luck. My husband works as a carer/support worker - he has actually left this full time to go 0 hours contract with a few agencies because there is so much work around and he can choose his hours. He has had no trouble getting this line of work. This might be something that can fit in with school hours if it is right for you - popping in on the elderly, helping people with chores etc. Can range from minimum wage to about £10ph.

Hi again,

We used to do weekly carboot sales that would make £30-£100 a profit each week, depending on the day. We'd go to the local auction house and buy boxes of allsorts to resell. I used to buy 20 gem rings from china ebay auctions for 99p delivered as sell them for £2 each. Also there is ironing services, gardening jobs, whatever will give you a bit of money.

We are both well educated and could have been capable of better paying jobs, but we prefer low pay for low stress. I think that is the deal you make. Our aim is to both earn about £12k a year each, so we have lots of spare time each, but also pay very little tax each. We enjoy living quite frugally though (and have no kids), I cut our own hair lol. I know many of us are coming from different angles on this forum, but £500 a month should be quite easy if you break it down - it's only £15 a day or something. You could probably make about £5 of that straight off just by doing surveys.

Thanks for ideas Twiggy :)

Unfortunately we don't have a car - we would like to get one, but again, it's money we don't have - so car boot sales and care work won't work for us - one of my friends who used to be a solicitor now does care work to fit around her kids and she says it works really well for her :)

I've had a go at surveys but I've never had much luck with them, I always get kicked out of them before you get to the point where they pay you anything for doing them!

I think if we could get to where you are joint salary wise we would feel like we were living like kings!!!! We are currently on more like half that so you can see why it is so stressful! We have also both had jobs where we have earned a lot more in the past so it is hard, we have had to cut back and cut back. Not quite sure why we are in this situation but we are and we just have to get on with it! It's a combination of a few bad decisions, some false assumptions and mostly a lot of bad luck. But just a few more years now and my daughter will be older and I will be able to look for full time work, my problem right now is, I can't look for full time work outside the home, my partner's main problem is, he went back to university as a mature student thinking it would improve his job prospects and so far it hasn't done, in fact if anything it seems to have put him in a worse position in the jobs market than he would have been if he hadn't bothered in the first place. Motherhood...it's been interesting! And not at all how I planned it! But it's life and you've just got to get on with it!

Also there is the option of tutoring. My husband used to do this by advertising on gumtree and uni students would come to the house. But it could easily have been for a high school subject, .. I think your husband does History doesn't he? You can get about £30 an hour for doing private tuition, there is online agencies, or as I said, gumtree. You can even tutor via skype. Might also be worth offering your proof reading services on gumtree for uni students. Just try everything and something will stick. I can't remember everything we have tried to make a quick buck, but it has been varied!

I've done some private tutoring before :) I've looked into doing it again through an agency but they all seem to ask for a teaching qualification?

I know, the things we do to try and earn some money :D since getting made redundant in 2010 and deciding I wanted to work from home I have so far tried:- mystery shopping, virtual assistant, social media management, telemarketing, mlm and proofreading, and none of them have earned me very much! :D

I did the exams for Appen last Tuesday but still haven't heard anything back from them regarding the results, which seems a bit odd!

Leapforce I never heard anything back after my initial application, and Lionbridge rejected me but have since been sending me emails inviting me to apply for other jobs with them, but every time I do I get rejected!

How are you getting on with Leapforce AppleBlack?

Things are happening... :) after feeling pretty despondent yesterday that we have both been applying and applying but not hearing anything back for a while....one of the big things they used to teach us when I was in mlm is 'take massive action' and I have certainly been doing that these last few weeks, throwing everything I've got at it, but today, well, what a difference a day can make :) First, my partner heard he has an interview for a job with the emergency services, which if he got it would mean a big increase in salary for him, then, this evening, not one but two of the jobs I've applied for recently came back and asked me to do some tests for them :) one is for academic writing which I found on gumtree and the other is for a virtual assistant job I found on working mums. The academic writing is freelance so you are paid project by project and I could fit it around my existing job, the virtual assistant job is more like the va job I used to have, which was what I was doing before I joined Avon, where you have to work fixed hours every day, and I would have to give up my other job to do it, but that would be fine as this one would be more hours, so therefore more money. Also, I've just completed the free affiliate marketing training programme on moreniche and I'm thinking this is something I could do and which could tie in nicely with my online shop. I'm aware I'm rather late to this party and most if not all of you reading this will have already been doing affiliate marketing for years, so I feel a little bit embarrassed that I haven't! But better late than never! If all, or even just one of these various possibilities that have come up today were to actually come off it would make a huge difference for us, so keep your fingers crossed for us!

This is one of my posts on this forum from last year. I have deleted some of it so it makes more sense.

... I am the only one that keeps crashing into dead ends? I guess this seems somewhat one childish but I am feeling like I am putting the donkey work into trying to find something but nothing is out there for me. Feeling demotivated to say the least.

All I want is to make a bit extra cash for my family. My spare time is a little sporadic with school runs, a evening job, after school clubs, bit of volunteer work etc etc I just get free pockets here and there.

I didn't get in to the text messaging gig. Surveys - well sometimes I do wonder if the cost of running the PC to do them is greater than the return. My phone won't run any fancy apps. I am not adverse to 'adult' text messaging but my leads haven't gone anywhere.

Is it just me swimming against the tide? :( :( :(

Anyhow for the last 7 months (3 months after my tantrum) I have been making at least £500 a month, fitting money making around my family. This site WILL help you make it happen.

Thanks Blackpepper and busybusy! :)

What is it that you are doing now busybusy, to earn an extra £500 a month, if you don't mind me asking?

I agree about surveys, I find them so tedious too!

Progress of a different kind this morning! I have at last applied for a nectar card, I have been meaning to ever since we moved here 18 months ago and our nearest supermarket became sainsburys...I know, I know, I have been really missing a trick there! I figured out that if nothing else at least we could get our hands on some of those pizza express vouchers! My partner normally refuses to go there as he reckons its overpriced for what it is but he would go if it was free! Also, I took a deep breath, picked up the phone and called the company Ricky recommended to me to get the ball rolling on my ppi claim, again, something I've been meaning to do for years but not been able to bring myself to do as its dredging up the past. I got the impression that the woman on the other end of the line thought I was a right ditz not being able to remember much but I was brave and I 'fessed up and that's the hard part done now, actually picking up the phone and talking to someone, now it's just a case of signing the documents and letting them get on with it! Fingers crossed I get some money back from it!

I do lots of bits but the bulk of it comes from being a WSEr, however the company I do it for isn't taking on. The contract will end soon so it is a case of make hay while the sun shines. It took me months to find something to fit. My husband was very supportive when I got frustrated about getting nowhere, but it his job to be supportive. This forum really will help to keep your chin up when you feel like you are getting nowhere.

I did those tests, who knows, maybe one of the companies will offer me a job?

Also, exciting news, I applied to a jewellery designer in Rotterdam to be his uk sales agent a few weeks ago and had a telephone interview with him and he said he was very interested in taking me on but wanted to wait until the end of this month to make a final decision. Today, he has emailed me to say he is sending me some of his jewellery so I can familiarise myself more with his brand, how cool is that?! :)

Not sure if I will get the job or if I will accept it if I do get it but I am very excited about the free jewellery!!! :D

I wonder if he'll ask for it back if I don't get/don't take the job? :D

If he does make sure he pays the postage ;D

Have you considered just doing the PPI part yourself, with your bank. I did it for my husband via the green site and a mock up letter I can see. Saves you a small fortune compared to those companies doing things, my bank provided me with the statements for free.
