My biggest piece of advice would be to avoid "lifestyle" blogs and go for a product oriented niche instead. It might not be as interesting, trendy or enjoyable, but i think they are much easier to monetise if you choose a good niche and are capable of creating lots of content. I always look for niches with an average product cost of at least £100 and I always target the U.S. market rather than UK. Obviously selling expensive products in a huge market is better than selling cheap (low commission) products in a tiny market.
After a crazy 6-9 months of learning Affiliate Marketing and posting like a madman (often at 2am!), I now only write about 1-2 posts per month. This generates an "almost" passive income in excess of $4,000 per month. If it wasn't for the day job (and my new allotment) keeping me busy I am sure that I could significantly improve on this. Provided you are creating quality posts containing 1,000+ words, the simple formula for success is: more posts=more organic visitors=more sales=more commissions.
Good luck.
