I tried the new wordpress Gutenberg update a few months ago and wasnt keen. I'm just making a start on a new blog and theres an update saying that it will be rolled out with the next wordpress update and if youre not sure how compatible it will be with current theme and plug ins, switch to the classic editor until youre ready to make the switch.

So if by any chance my current blog isnt compatible, Ill have to start again from scratch? Ive only JUST got the hang of wordpress and now theyre faffing about with it.

It's just the editor that's changing, not wordpress as a whole.

Themes / plugins won't be affected

And if you really can't get on with Gutenberg there's already a plugin which exists to revert it back to the classic editor :)

I see this is being pushed pretty hard now.

It's forever telling me to upgrade to it when I login to one of my sites

Holding off for now, don't like making wholesale changes before Christmas lol

BURN IT WITH FIRE!!

I made the switch over the weekend and within 24hrs I had installed the Classic plugin. My link plugin didn't work (for no/dofollows), it kept jumping to the top of the page as I was typing and generally took longer to get a post complete.

When will companies realise that if it ain't broke don't fix it!

ehhhhh,
Do you know how it sits if you use something like Theme X / Cornerstone (https://theme.co/x/) as you don't tend to use any of the standard wordpress creation features

I'm not sure. I use a combination of Elementor and Generate Press for mine, both of which let me do what Gutenburg is trying to do (such as customise pages) without any of the faff using an editor I'm familiar with.

All I can suggest is switching one of your sites to give it a try, if you don't like then install the plugin and poof it's all good again.

So this is the new Add Post page. You have to add blocks to create your page. One thing I didn't like is if I wanted to make a link nofollow I have to edit it in the HTML rather than just clicking the settings cog that one of my plugins provides me.

If you mean the bit in the middle that's a plugin, that isn't a new Gutenburg feature. I use the "Page Header" section for my disclosures.

I guess it depends. You might want certain widgets to appear on a separate sidebar depending on the category of the post...so it'd make sense to have it separate to your usual one?

I've tried it on a couple of blogs and think it works if you want really basic amendments to a page so the page is more than just a block of text with images but....

I hate that you can't control column widths, I don't like the link system and find it all a bit clunky to be honest - having headers split into separate blocks rather than just being part of the text like a Word document seems strange to me and it's not exactly intuitive to get rid of blocks you've created accidentally. I prefer the original editor :)

I'll be quiet now.

I tried it last night, didn't like it. As Chammy said I couldn't us the no/do follow widget. And I couldn't work out how to change the colour of text (just one or two highlighted words) it just kept changing the colour of all the text in a block. I ended up installing the plugin to change it back to classic.

Still holding off from upgrading to this on any of my sites. I know it's the way wordpress is going to be going forward so I just need to suck it up and accept it but I just don't want to do that before Christmas and the 'busy season' for my sites!

Apparently the latest WP update includes a critical security update.

There is a 4.9.9.9.9.9.9 (or whatever) available somewhere but I've bitten the bullet and gone for WordPress Mahoney

That new block editor is so poor. Why did they try to reinvent the wheel? It wasn't broke so why fix it

It happens sadly when you are reliant on these 3rd party companies who make the software we use every day.

The thing is what's the alternative? Use another CMS system like Joomla? Go off and use Google''s Blogger?

Or go back to the late 90s when everyone would just learn how to code in HTML to create their own websites and then they had 100% control over everything!

Gotta say I've changed my opinion of the WordPress block editor.
After some background reading and trial and error, I think it's excellent. Once you get the hang of everything being in separate blocks.

So much easier to add buttons, text + image, columns and more.

yeah I HATED it at first but am totally fine with it now.

There are some fantastic addons you can get to make CTA buttons within a blog post in various colours etc..

Yeah. I've created some new CTA buttons already. Wondering whether to keep them black background & white text, plus blue background + white text or mash up loads of different colours for each CTA for my guides?
