Yo Ho Ho,
just realised it's that time of year again...the annual work party/xmas lunch season.
I've got a lunch this week for like £20 that we have to fund ourselves. The alternative is stay in the office all afternoon.
Also, several other events of 'scheduled jollity'.

Anyone else in the same boat? Swear I'm not doing this caper again in 2020 :)

Crikey that's an early work doo!

So in my last job I would take (and pay) for my team to go out for a meal (usually all you can eat buffet style) on the Thursday before we all break upf or Christmas and then we would have a BIG ICT Corp night out on the Friday night.

Beyond that, there was the usual mix of emails sent in AUGUST about putting down deposits for fancy pants meals somewhere snazzy or the ICT fuddle (huddle with food) which was just painful at times

no I don't miss it.

Well I miss the piss up on the Friday but that's about it!

Our do is next friday. Everyone has to pay for themselves. I think there are only 14 out of about 50 people going. I wont be one of them. Partly because I have to pay but mostly because I am an unsociable bastard and hate christmas.

thinking back I've been to some right fancy 'Christmas meals' when I used to contract at Law Firms doing IT stuff. I remember once getting a hand-carved box with wine and cheeses in it. Everyone at the firm got one, don't think I've ever felt SO out of touch lol

Ltd companies get to write off £150 per employee don't think I think as 'entertainment' at Christmas which is why they tend to book restaurants out and stuff

Making people pay for themselves is a bit harsh

My worst ever do was when I worked at a uni. One year in their infinite wisdom they decided to give all individual academic teams a budget to go to a restaurant. I was academic related so basically fell in with support staff. We got to have a funded 'party' on uni premises, our sports hall, with entertainment ( and I use that word loosely) provided by the more extrovert staff members. By the time we got to a whole staff carol singalong conducted by the Dean's PA wearing a Miss Whiplash outfit (???) I bailed and went whole feeling like I'd just witnessed my nursing home future fast forward another 40 years.

In the years that followed I took my own small team of 4 myself, I felt it was duty to protect them from harm!

Yeah, it's early cos let's just say that some staff are on exceedingly good terms and have like 3 weeks off for xmas.

That's generous of you to pay for team members. I don't even get the benefit of a piss up - wrong overall demographic for that.

That's not all - at last year's lunch a supplier pretty much used it as a sales pitch and asked me for a purchase order number. If looks could kill!

we used to have suppliers 'donate' gifts for the Christmas Raffle. So like an ipad or something but then they had to come along.....and would talk... lol

That's another advantage of working for an agency - I am rarely in a school for long so don't get involved. I am going to a new school tomorrow and it is supposed to be at least until Christmas but even if that happens I won't get asked/agree to go to the night out.

Yep, Christmas do on Wednesday this week. It's paid by us. It's a set menu so at least I can plan for the price I guess. I don't really mind the dinner, it's all the added extras (usually everybody blags off early for the pub before, so add a few drinks, then if you're feeling sociable some will make a night of it after...). I'll be having the dinner and heading home I expect!
