Basically.
1) Use computer to 'computer' something. This earns you bitcoin.
2) Bitcoin is stored in either a virtual wallet 'in the cloud' or a wallet on your computer.
3) Bitcoin Exchanges allow you to buy and also sell Bitcoins for real world cash or other crypto currencies
4) Profit?
Try not to think about Crypto currencies as currencies, Think of them more like 'shares'. You buy/trade shares in different Crypto currencies/Crypto Companies and the values can go up and down. The real kicker is appart from seeing what the market is doing, its hard to work out what the price will do. You can look at the world news to see how other countries are handling Crypto as when some countries come out with pro-crypto/anti-crypto currency policies that can affect the price.
You make money the same way as with shares. Buy low, sell high.
