Just stumbled across this website where it seems you transcribe speech and video to text. Not sure if its worthwhile me trying some of the tasks but wondered if anybody else has tried this site?

I haven't used the site yet but after seeing your post I just signed up. I need to do a few qualification tests before I can start working (and I can't do them right now) but it looks pretty good so thanks for mentioning it. I guess I should search Google for horror stories first but if it does turn out to be okay they seem to pay twice a month which is good, though I can't see if there is a minimum payout amount.

Gosh those rates are REALLY low. If they're charging a client $1 per audio minute transcribed what is the worker getting? If you can type at 80 wpm, it takes about 7 or 8 minutes to transcribe 1 minute of audio, obviously if the audio is poor quality or difficult to make out it will take a lot longer. So you're looking at probably $0.50 to $0.75 per audio minute, doing 8 minutes in an hour, at the very best you're looking at $6 to $8 and hour which is half of minimum wage.

One for the very speedy, very experienced transcriptionists only.

Or someone who likes to type, I knew someone who I used to work with who could type and answer the phone at the same time. I am a fast typer but I cant do that, she always amazed me, she would be copy typing things and talking to someone and putting them through to a department all at the same time. Seem very low pay for what they are asking but I guess if you have time on your hands and do not mind typing but I wonder what the acceptance levels etc are? That would worry me, if its bad audio and you have a typo do you get refused payment for the entire piece?

i read some reviews for this company from clients and there were loads of complaints about the standard of transcripts they had got for their money, so i'm guessing they are not too fussy ;)

This is audio transcription though not copy typing - it's listening to an audio file or youtube video and writing down what you hear. Can't do that and talk on the phone at the same time!

I would imagine a lot of the people working for this sort of outfit are the developing-world based freelancers who are happy to work for £3 or less an hour.
