Hey all. So the medical professionals in the know tell me that it's likely I have Aspergers (formal diagnosis to follow in a lengthy timescale!). Anyone else got any experience of this? It doesn't seem like the greatest thing ever to have...although it does explain a lot about me!

My daughter has Aspergers. She was 'alternative' from birth. School/college didn't like to label kids, so she didn't get a formal diagnosis until she was 24!
You are in good company with some very famous people: Susan Boyle, Courtney Love, Dan Harmon, Dan Akroyd, Daryl Hannah, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Andy Warhol to name but a few. They certainly haven't let it hold them back :)

She's good. She has her moments, but generally she gets by fine. She carries a card to say that she can become panicked and non verbal in stressful situations, which is helpful.

Her iPad is a godsend - she programmes an alarm for pretty much everything, so she doesn't forget - until she forgets to charge her iPad lol.

I think the alarms would make me jump. The card sounds like a good idea :)

I’m a social worker by trade and have worked with a lot of people with Aspergers. To me, it’s fascinating and makes people unique. There are so many positives to draw from this in terms of if this potential diagnosis “fits” with your persona. For example, me and my partner argue a lot about my lack of ability to be organised. Yet I’m waiting on a diagnosis of adult ADHD. I’m not hyperactive in the slightest, but I have no attention span and can’t concentrate on one task at a time, but multitasking is my skill, purely because going from one thing to the next and back again works for me. Yet I seem to fail at doing one set task. I know I need to embrace this as who I am and use it to my advantage. The same way as you might be able to. You clearly have so many skills and abilities so make sure that a “diagnosis” doesn’t make you feel labelled, but liberated and gives you more ownership of yourself and what you are capable of. Sorry if I sound crazy!!!!

I have the opposite - I can get so absorbed in one task that it takes over. Sounds like we're both at extremes! Haha. I'm still trying to understand what it all means currently.

And that absorption in one task is precisely where you can draw your strengths. Think of it as a positive! Whereas I can’t get anything done!!

My daughter gets hyper focused on one task too. She can sit for hours making jewellery. Other times it will be video games or watching a TV series back to back on Netflix until its finished.

She worked in a shop for a while and would happily spend all day tidying up the ribbons if she was allowed to.
