I've been trying out the Job Spotter app during May so thought I'd let you all know how I got on. Apologies for the long post.
This is a nice app. I used the Android version but it's available for iPhone too. A couple of Shedders have mentioned it already. Basically if you spot a job advert in the window of a small business such as a shop, hairdresser, restaurant etc, you simply take a pic of the advert, then a second pic of the front of the premises, upload immediately, and get paid in Amazon gift cards.
The process:
If anybody has any questions about the Job Spotter app - ask away. I do recommend it as an easy little earner in your spare time. @Jon - maybe you could ask a rep to come on and provide more info?
This is a nice app. I used the Android version but it's available for iPhone too. A couple of Shedders have mentioned it already. Basically if you spot a job advert in the window of a small business such as a shop, hairdresser, restaurant etc, you simply take a pic of the advert, then a second pic of the front of the premises, upload immediately, and get paid in Amazon gift cards.
The process:
- Using the app, take a photo of a job advert you've seen in a shop window. You have the option to instantly use your pic if it's nice and clear, or you can discard it and take another
- The second step is to take a photo of the entire front of the premises, making sure the business name can be read. Again, you can use this pic straightaway or discard it and try again
- Then hit the submit button while you're still at the premises
- Your submissions will be approved (or not) sometime within the next few days - sometimes instantly, sometimes it takes longer. The longest I waited was 4 days
- Each of your successful submissions will be awarded points according to the app's algorithm which I won't go into here. The least points I received was 5 and the most was 102, with varied amounts in between
- Redeem your points whenever you like in the form of Amazon eGift cards in GBP. I've redeemed once for £11.52 and the code arrived within 24 hrs
- I found it an ultra-slick app to use - probably the best earning app I've come across. Very easy, smooth and fast. I am lucky to have a good 4G signal in my area - I'm not sure how it would cope in an area with poor coverage. Has anybody had any problems uploading?
- There is no minimum payout - redeem whenever you like
- Submissions get rejected for being "duplicates" if there is more than one upload received for a single location, which sometimes seems unfair. For example, a pub in my high street had three very different jobs advertised in the window (bar staff/floor staff/cleaner), but only one of these was accepted. The other two were rejected outright for being at the same location. At a local independent butchers, the trainee position was accepted, but the full-time experienced role was rejected. This doesn't seem to benefit anybody - jobseekers don't get to see the "rejected" positions, and the spotter doesn't get rewarded for finding unique opportunities
- The dreaded "not at location" rejection . This one is infuriating! I have taken a photo of the advert at the location. I have taken a second photo of the location. I have uploaded at the location. How can I not be at the location?!! Unless there's some kind of quantum mechanics weirdness going on - perhaps the location only exists when I'm looking at it? Or maybe it only exists in a parallel universe? Anyway - I sulked big time when this happened. The store in question has only been open for a few weeks - but I'm sure it does exist…
- Take the time to have a look through the tutorial on the app and the examples of good and bad submissions. There is also a basic explanation of how the points are allocated, depending on how worthy your submission is deemed to be. Basically you get more points for jobs at independent local businesses that encourage applications in person, and fewer points for generic adverts at branches of national chains
- Make sure your mobile's location service is switched on
- If your mobile is automatically connecting to local Wi-Fi hotspots, you might want to switch this function off temporarily. One of my spots wouldn't upload as my mobile had hopped onto the Wi-Fi for the O2 store next door. My upload paused until I switched back to 4G - then it zipped through straightaway. You need to be at the location of the job advert for your upload to be accepted for payment - so you can't wait until you get home, for example
