Some people have mentioned using a spread sheet to log their income. I wonder if anyone could suggest something free and very simple.

I just use a self made on that is literally

date - Company who have paid me - Amount

That's it!

I keep meaning to do a blog-post about this.

Simplest version

3 Columns

¦ Date ¦ Company ¦ Value ¦

Real minimal version 4 Columns

¦ Date ¦ Company ¦ Value ¦ Tax ¦

However I am planning to start 2018 with a new, more complex spreadsheet (and colourful graph creation).

¦ Date ¦ Income Type ¦ Company ¦ Value ¦ Tax ¦

The 'income type' would then drive the tax amout. This would then be saved seperately so I knew what I need to pay in tax.

Glad we think alike. You've said before that you don't do 'taxable' work anymore so the 3 columns should be fine.
I lied I do have a tax column at the end like you do as obviously TMS work is taxable :)

@Jon and @The Reverend How are you tracking your expenses on those 3 and 4 column spreadsheets?

I'm an idiot who doesn't claim any expenses because I can't be bothered to fill that part of the tax return in / be bothered to track what I purchase lol

Thanks. When I sold books on Amazon I had an old fashioned account book and used one side to log income and the other side to log expenses. I think it is worth making a note of your expenses to make sure you are actually making a profit and have not just got an expensive hobby.

I am used to doing self assessment tax. I was just wondering if any one was using fancy software to do their accounts. It is reassuring to know you aren't. I don't think I will be paying tax this year as I retired in March but it would be good to get any tax refunded from Red Wigwam earnings.
