It's been around 13 years since I was at Uni but in a nutshell 'go cheap or go home!'

I dread to think what the prices are like at Uni in London but oop north when I came to Leeds I was gobsmacked at how cheap everything was, especially when it came to going out on the razz.

I'm at a London uni and it's not cheap! We have my husbands wage, but I still use all my bursary and student finance just to get us through month to month!

We make side cash from MB, eBay selling, I pick up a few additional shifts at my hospital if I can and we shop around to try and get the best deals on our bills, contracts, general shopping etc

Being a student is no fun in terms of money but I'm keeping that end goal in sight

I've been a student for 4 years now and I've found the best ways to save money are to buy non-perishable items in bulk like tea bags, pasta, toilet roll etc. Also keeping your eye out for reduced items in the supermarket is always a good plan. If the product is about to expire - freeze it! (depending on what it is of course)

But my biggest money saver is not taking my bank card out with me on a night out, if I only bring out the cash I want to spend I can't go overboard when I've had a few a few pints and I think it's a good idea to start ordering shots - saves my bank balance and my head the next morning ;)

Oh one last thing, I'm sure most students will already do this but make sure to ask for student discount wherever you go! Make the most of those discounts whilst you can. Unidays/NUS extra too, of course, are great for discounts on all sorts of products, my personal favourite being the 50% off Spotify Premium.

I would say Budget, budget, budget. When you get your student loan; divide your amount down into weeks so you know exactly what you have to live off. Then stick to it. I'm sure you get discounted things from your NUS card, and subsidised Travel so really make the most of it whilst you can! I had a part time job at uni that actually made the world of difference. Buy second hand books (uni books are SO EXPENSIVE!) and apply for grants where you can. There's also lots of sites online to make a bit of extra cash like Qmee (surveys and searching the web) Whatusersdo (testing websites) and Slicethepie (reviewing music).

Every little helps!

When I was at Uni, I would find that my library would cheaply sell off older additions of textbooks which I bought and then just made notes of anything that was important and missing. I didn't find much variation between new and old additions so this helped me save some money.

Biggest money saver for me at uni was food. Went supermarket shopping, did my own cheapo cooking, met up with people after meals and saved massively compared to eating out, even in student cafeterias or corner shops. Doesn't have to be anti social if you invite people over to eat and get invited back! Otherwise I cut spending on anything other than essentials to the bone, so next to nothing on 'stuff' like clothes, magazines, music, snacks, shopping etc, so I could spend on cheap booze & going out.

All you can drink in heaven or hell used to be memorable in leeds! Although I'm sure the cheap vodka there gave me gut rot...

Sign up for every student discount possible... the nus is the main card, and always ask is there student discount.

Bulk buy non- perishable items, teabags, coffee, toilet roll

If your in a house share - have a kitty for larger items, cleaning materials, large bags pasta, rice

Yellow sticker shopping

Avoid taking bank card on ngts out....
