Has anyone found any clever ways to eat out on the cheap, other than mystery shopping the restaurant?

We go to Wetherspoons and also look out for early bird deals

What do you have to do to qualify for a corporate discount?

How does Groupon work, do you just sign up and they email stuff to you, or is there more to it than that?

Just sign up to the site and grab the deals! Simple as that!

Corporate discount usually just requires the person going to to the bar to work for a large ish firm nearby

Two for ones are good for keeping the spend down too and Indian restaurants. And the 'Ill just have 2 starters instead of a main course' trick. Sharing desserts. And asking for tap water instead of buying a second round of drinks

Amazon also have deals for restaurants. The last one we went to said it was not the full menu available with the deal, but it was a good 75% covered.

Sign up to your favourite restaurants newsletters or offers. I get a lot of emails around my birthday and kids holidays with discounts or offers.

Also Fayre and Square pubs have a loyalty card where you get points (as well as the "2for" offer. We used ours the other week and had saved £7.50 in points which paid for one of the meals.

Prezzo has an app which you can download and offers which change regularly, things like 2 for 1 on main courses.

Also if you collect Tesco points those can be traded for 4 times face value for a variety of different restaurants.

You could also look at Tastecard http://www.tastecard.co.uk/ which do a lot of 2 for 1 meals.

You might also want to think about unlimited buffet restaurants.

Itsu restaurants do a 50% sale half an hour before closing https://www.itsu.com/about/sale Don't know if they have restaurants outside of London.

Bon Appetit! :)

Tastecards are well worth the money. If you keep your eyes open, there are always sign up offers about, either offering a big discount on the card or a free card for a month or two. Most of the offers are 2 for 1 or 50% off for Taste Card holders, the only limitation is that Fridays and Saturdays are not included. We tend to eat out in the week anyway so that doesn't really matter to us. Just check on the website that there are plenty of places near you (there should be, it does seem very popular).

I've signed up with both Groupon and Woucher and have had dining out deals with both...it was through Groupon that I found out, completely by accident, that we have an Indian restaurant in our town that not only does a starter/main course curry/rice/naan deal for £10, but it has no alcohol licence, so they're quite happy for you to bring your own drinks! It's saved us a fortune.

Can anyone recommend anywhere to go and get a decent steak without breaking the bank?

I second the advice about signing up to email lists - Pizza Express in particular sends out special deals just about every week.

In the event of getting poor or disappointing service - complain, complain, complain! While you don't want to have a meal spoiled by poor service, it is worth firing off an email if it happens - I've had three freebies recently by doing this!

Agreed about complaining.

I went for a meal with my mum and little girl to a local carvery. I paid for the tickets and then when we got to where the meat was served the meat looked pretty ropey having been cooked to death, so I asked for my money back as we were in a hurry and couldn't wait for the next lot of meat to come out. Got my money back and 3 free meals which we had the week later and was delicious.

I need to get on some of these email lists - great tip thanks!

No idea where to get a good steak as I'm a veggie! Harvester, maybe?

Very excited by the news that pret a manger is going to pilot serving alcohol and evening meals as I love their sarnies!

I can second Groupon local and Amazon local, had a few good deals from there. There is also a website called dealzippy which includes of those kind of sites in one search (groupon, kgb deals, wowcher, etc), so you don't have to search each one individually :)
