I used to pay voluntary class 2 NIC monthly, then it stopped being taken. Not had a letter about any changes and then when I filled out my self-assessment online I saw I owed over £140. It asked for my bank details so do HMRC going to take it out automatically? Or do I need an account number of HMRC to them? I didn't owe any tax so I am wondering how they get the NIC payment?

I think they used to take it automatically but you now pay it separately

[member=1]Jon[/member] is correct, it is now done through your tax return.

I'm not 100% sure how they take the money as last filing it didn't work properly and I rang to ring them and pay it over the phone - sorry!

Mine was a right shambles...!

Probably a bit late if you had to complete it last night but they just bundle the NI in with any tax owed. It should show in your calculation and you then pay anything owed once it has been submitted.

Definitely prefer the old way of paying quarterly/6 monthly than yearly.

Yes me too. The situation is even worse if you don't earn enough to pay income tax and could apply for an exemption if you wanted to. If you've tried to pay Class 2 NI contributions voluntarily in the last year or two, the system hasn't coped very well as it wants to collect it with your income tax - but you don't pay income tax...

I submitted my 2015-2016 self-assessment tax return online about a week ago (I know I know - this year I'll get it done sooner! ::)) and there was a box to tick if I want to pay voluntary Class 2 contributions. I don't remember seeing that last year? Anyway - I ticked the box and when I went back to the site a couple of days after submitting my return there was a request for payment for £145.09 for Class 2 NI 2015-2016 - to be paid by 31st January 2017! Like in 3 days time! A bit of a shocker but I did pay it so I know I'm all up to date now.

I prefer to pay my Class 2 (it used to be called "stamp" payments years ago) as it will go towards my state pension - even though strictly speaking I am exempt from paying.

[member=48]coomassie_blu[/member] if you're exempt from paying do you not get a benefit that gives you a stamp automatically? If you do you don't need to pay it twice :) You can just ring to check each year that it went well.

Also, the tax/NI is always due by 31st January that is why I think it MAD that people wait so close to the wire to file. I like to file in April but I'm super super organised and I'd explode if I had to wait.

You can file beforehand and still pay the balance by the 31st of January. ;)
