What do people think about the coronation, will you be watching?

I am not anti-monarchy (and I certainly do not want a president) but I also think this coronation is a huge waste of money. And yes I know it's supposed to generate 1 billion pounds for the economy but who benefits? My bills won't go down, the income I earn seems to be harder to come by and nothing seems to be getting cheaper so who will be enjoying this windfall and does it ever trickle down? I probably won't watch it the whole thing although no doubt I will dip in out of curiosity, lol.

I guess I am becoming more cynical especially after I heard that the recent text alarm was conducted by a company owned by Rishi's wife's family. Is anybody surprised anymore?

I reckon there will be lots of people out there with similar views to yourself. I am in favour of the monarchy in principle but I'm not really into all the pomp and circumstance that comes with events such as the coronation.

Since they've even pared down on the number of classical musicians being used, I'm grouchy about it on principle. And as a provable descendant of the ancient House of Wessex, I certainly won't be pledging allegiance to a Johnny-come-lately pretender! ;)

I'm taking course after course and exam after exam at the moment, all in an attempt to increase my income streams. Will it work? Am I wasting my time? Who knows. I'm also trying to make friends with AI and turn it to my advantage. Freelance grind copywriting seems to be absolutely dead in the water at the moment thanks to ChatGPT. I've had one client at Fiverr in the past month (my usual academic, high-research classical music client) instead of the 15-20 I could normally expect. I suppose I could change my model, cut my prices, and say I'm using ChatGPT to write your article which will be fully fact-checked before submission, but I don't want to do that.

Oh well. Back to studying for the Telus Search Quality Rating exam.

It does all feel like a grind, I have to work harder/longer to make the same. I don't blame the royal family but I find this let's pretend everything is wonderful and give the public a show really grating at the moment. When all the confetti is cleared, everything will be exactly the same, and no.10 will say something about how we all have to just learn to accept to cut our cloth accordingly and go without luxuries except............

I don't think I'll be taking the oath of fidelity or whatever it's called. However I know one lady who probably will. Don't worry I'm not planning to shimmy over the perimeter walls of Buckingham or Kensington Palace or Windsor Castle with my bow and arrow and wreak havoc (as if I'd be physically capable of it). King Charles had no choice about being born heir to the throne anymore than I had a choice about being born into a middle class family. I don't envy the royal family the goldfish bowl existence and sometimes I think the papers make up their stories as they go along, especially about the Duchess of Sussex. I'm not convinced she's as toxic as she is alleged to be.

They are as relevant to the 21st century as a Betamax video recorder.

And about as useful.

I'll watch the actual ceremony, just for the sense of history, but certainly wont be watching all the build up of people arriving and horses and carriages clumping about or whatever.

I know a teacher well at one of the school meet and greets she did early on and they said she was absolutely delightful, and fabulous with the children. I'm at worst neutral towards them. I think Harry did the only thing open to him in leaving the family firm and taking his wife overseas.

Anyway, I've got skip arriving in an hour, which is extremely exciting as I can get rid of an awful lot of junk!

I thought it was an interesting spectacle to watch, the history behind it, the locations, but then there's also the absurdity of it all, and issues with having a monarchy in 2023. But I'm not sure how I actually feel about that.

The Zadok the priest bit was amazing though, goosebumps.

Didn't feel that special when you look back as let's be honest William will be having this done again soon..

The music was exceptional all round - the Monteverdi Choir's Ecce Sacerdos in the pre-ceremony concert even shut the BBC commentators up for 10 minutes. And I did wonder whether we should just crown Sir Bryn Terfel and have done with it all. Then again, the guy has sung Wotan, so you'd expect a bit of majesty there. And hats off to Roddy Williams for not only singing so beautifully but composing some of the orchestral music too.

The impact of Zadok the Priest is always overwhelming, no matter how many times you've heard it. Handel is always one of my fantasy dinner party guests. He really understood the whole theatre of monarchy.

As for the Coronation itself...I just feel uncomfortable at the open opulence and expense when an estimated 14 million or so people are behind on at least one payment in this country at the moment because the cost of living has outstripped their earnings so rapidly. I'm also very conscious that the King seems to be a very elderly 74 and I suspect we'll be doing this again within the decade.

I know what you mean about the costs against the crisis currently, but there's a huge benefit in terms of hospitality and lesuire over the weekend that will have been impacted, I believe some figures banded around have been up to £400m as a result of the coronation itself so there's a benefit there clearly on spend and such.

At the same time I think the country well the government wastes so much money (just look at the cost of Truss in November) and give negative effects when actually this had a positive income potential

That much is true - bars and hotels were absolute heaving out as far as Zone 4 in London, and I'm hoping enough tourists will have realised that London is still Open for Business, even given...everything.

My politics are pretty obvious, but it was interesting to note my benign feelings towards former PMs pre-Cameron, and towards PMs post-2010...not so much.

I wish Charles and Camilla well. I know they have good staff around them, but that's a hell of a thing to be taking on at their time of life, wealth and privilege or not.

Zadok the Priest always brings me to the brink of tears, it's so moving.

As an aside, I was reading some of the comments btl in the Guardian and someone mentioned Penny M holding the 'Sword of Sincerity' and the fact that in slightly different circumstances it could well have been Jacob RM carrying out this duty. Someone replied, "he'd have trouble holding the effing Feather Duster of Futility". I've been chuckling ever since...

Can you imagine the impact of Zadok at George II's coronation, with everyone hearing it for the first time (with the ink barely dry, so I understand...)? Incredible stuff.

I think we're all talking about Penny Mordaunt because it's so unusual to see a member of the current government discharging their duties competently and with dignity...

Yes. She did a grand job I must say.
