Recently the DSA has released new figures. On average 38% of Direct Sellers are over 50, representing a rise over 32,000 people since 2011. The industry is also increasingly appealing to a multi-cultural audience, with over 30% of Direct Sellers being non-British.
More people are turning to Direct Selling as a real alternative to traditional employment, with over 68,000 (17%) working over 30 hours a week. The traditional demographic of stay-at-home mums now accounts for 29% of Direct Sellers, while men account for 24% of the sector.

a LOT of those figures have gotta be screwed though

I mean SO many people sign up to do direct selling and either can't be bothered with it or just do nothing but recruit. Are they all being counted as 'direct sellers'

I also personally think the whole sector is a total cesspit for people bending the truth about when it comes to how much they can earn and how quickly when signing up

For every person like you who puts in a LOT of effort to get your sales there are people spamming Facebook etc with just made up figures trying to get recruits

The 68,000 is a fact Jon I would say, they are the ones working 30 hours per week. And the DSA are a highly respected association so I would imagine they have the means to get the info to come to the conclusions they came to.
But I do agree that most people sign up and do very little, it's strange because the companies do provide training, but it all boils down to lack of belief, I talk from experience. People just can't believe that the business they signed up to will provide them and their families with a better life. But those that are succeeding are enjoying a better life, and why is that, because they started to believe and they never gave up. It's not easy, it's hard work but enjoyable and the support is excellent. But anyone coming on board with any direct sells biz must be prepared to work on themselves and self belief.

those 6 words there, that's what causes the problems.

People are led into direct selling with 'its only 1 hour a day and I earn £10,000 a week from it' type rubbish. Then when it does turn out that you have to actually work really hard to get ANYTHING from direct selling they have no interest in it.

Hard to know who to blame
The human race for being to gullible in the first place and thinking there is yet another free meal out there as long as they sign up an additional 5 people every week or the ones doing the sign ups in the first place.

I've been following the Younique launch very closly and people posting on netmums (http://www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/working-childcare-692/working-yourself-self-employed-76/wfy-self-employed-chat-clubs-501/1147203-younique-make-up-chat-area-2.html)

Someone there with their 200 signups, they have NO INTENTION of really getting into the makeup industry etc, they just want more people under them and for THEM to do the selling and then further recruiting

When is selling not selling, when it's direct selling...

200 sign ups, that's crazy! How can that person look after 200, like you said they aren't interested in anything else other than recruiting. Sadly it's people like that, that give the industry the wrong image. And yes sadly people are so desperate for something better many are taken in by the silly adverts.
