Contact the Passport Office and see if you can get a super fast tracked one - you will have to visit the office in person and it will cost you, but I have done it before.

I've rang. They can't do it, it's a child passport and earliest time is a week from appointment. Plus, the earliest appointment is Friday, 150 miles away in Glasgow. And even if I turn up there they can't guarantee whether it will be ready. I am gutted.

Scouring the web for you - found this on the the green site forum in response to a thread in 2006 about a 6 year olds passport that ran out 2 months previous to their flight that was booked for next day

This happened to us, My husbands passport ran out when we were due to travel to Lanzarote last year. The passport office could not help us at all.. So we rang the airline who we were flying with and they told us we could fly up on an expired passport for up to so long (sorry can't remember) and my husbands passport was longer expired than yours. So ring the airline because apparently it is up to their discretion..Good luck I hope this helps

Maybe a long shot but it might be worth ringing the airline if you haven't already

UPDATE:

Rang my local MP's office as there is so much coverage in the news about the ridiculousness of the passport office backlog. I'm awaiting a phone call. I'm distraught as it's going to cost at least 300 quid to alter flights, fast-track passport and travel.

I hope it gets sorted for you at the lowest cost possible...

I once booked a long weekend in Paris for me and my partner... we got to the hotel for them to tell us they had no record of our booking - well they did but for the same dates in the next month... Totally my fault I somehow booked for March instead of February. Luckily they had a room free but it cost us 100 euros more as it was valentines weekend.

Funny thing is we didn't go because it was Valentines weekend but because there was a card tournament in Paris that weekend... I still don't know how I managed it as I would have usually double checked the dates :-\

I'm so annoyed with myself.
Still no further forward. Having to keep appointment on Friday and hope that some Scottish dude in the Glasgow office takes pity on me and my son, and gives up his Friday night out on the pop to print us a nice, shiny new passport.

:(

I could cry. Again.

Aww, no.

I know of two others that this has happened to today! Weird coincidence.

One, the family are going on holiday on the 30th, and they applied for passports three weeks ago for several members of the family. She's rung and rung and there's nothing they can do to speed it up, until today she spoke to someone who agreed to put them on a fast-track printing. So ring, ring, ring might be worth a try. She'd been in touch with her MP too.

The other has just gone online to check in (some 30 minutes ago!) for her flights next Friday to find one of her son's passports has expired. She's rung everywhere and can only get an appointment in Belfast before next week. Have you tried Belfast? But her friends are urging her to turn up at her nearest passport office (Peterborough).

It sucks.

I couldn't possibly travel to Belfast; it's taken me all my time to drum up the courage for our flight (hopefully) next week lol. Actually, when I rang today they went through all the passport offices and there were no available appointments in Belfast until next week lol. As for turning up at the office? Bit of a long shot. My nearest one is miles away and it states not to turn up as they will not let you in at all. If it was for me, I would. But not when I have my son with me. I've Rung them all bloody day to see if they have a cancellation tomorrow with no luck. It takes a week to process a kids passport as they have to do "security" checks.

Just in case anyone's interested, I went to passport office today, and was told that they could fast-track the passport but I would have to go and collect it in a couple of days. It's 150 miles away from me but I agreed as it meant we could still go on holiday.
5 hours later, I'm boarding the train to go home, they rang, come and pick it up. I 've never moved as quick in my life, and I made it on to the train with 10 seconds to spare. :)
