How much nerve do you have when it comes to being frugal in shops?

I am not the greatest of hagglers but I think that they best place to start when it comes to haggling is when you buy second-hand goods either online or from shops such as second-hand furniture shops. I feel like the people almost expect you to haggle so it is relatively easy to engage in it.

Similarly, I have found it quite easy to haggle when it comes to things like rent.

Something I want to try and get better at haggling with is anything to do with cars >.<

My tip for furniture shops (well Ikea Bargain Corner at least!) is ALWAYS haggle! We've always been able to drive the price down no matter if it's a bed, sofa or anything else!
Don't ask, Don't get!

I'm not great but it's always worth a try I needed new carpets for our house we went to a place the guy was from Yorkshire so he went nuts when he heard my accent I used to my advantage and got free fitting along with a couple of hundred pound.

Our gas cooker my OH is massively fussy on brands we ended up getting free delivery on that .

There's probably more but I'm running on zero sleep.

I just think what's the worst that could happen, they say no?

Damn my stupid southern accent, no wonder that's never happened to me after living in Leeds for over 10 years lol

I always haggle where I can unless it's somewhere where that just isn't possible like shopping on Amazon or something lol

I do this a lot as well, doesn't take much effort and as long as you are polite and friendly to the person selling you stuff, you can get away with murder. I find that John Lewis is really good for asking for cash discounts, you can usually get at least 10% off electronic stuff there, Charity shops are the same. I buy a lot of playstation games (the original one) in charity shops now and replace the cases and put them on ebay for £5-80 each (depending on the game), where I go the disks get put in the same category as the 3 for £1 music CDs, and I can usually get 5 for a quid because the cases are cracked, then I recase them and put them on ebay. Even the crappiest games still go for £5-6, and have found some real gems like original MGS and Tomba

I managed to haggle a £12 to £1 in River Island.. had foundation stains all over it and a broken strap, not afraid to ask staff if theres anything they can do for me, easily fix and washable.

Also , I purchased over £100 in h&m store in Birmingham, got home and found everything I had brought was being sold second hand on ebay! returned it all and paid for it on ebay for less than £30...worth knowing to check it out before a big shopping trip.

Lots, it's genetic in my family and frowned upon if you don't haggle. This reminds of the sketch by stand up comic Russell Peters:

Must admit that I only really haggle if purchasing something expensive like a new sofa etc, which is rare anyway on my low budget.

A tip I have seen on the green site for haggling online is to go onto live chat if the website has one, ask a few questions about a product you are interested in buying, then enquire if they have any discount codes or have any flexibility on the price.

Another thing you can try (if not in a hurry) is to put items in your shopping basket (logged in), then log out and leave the website for a day or two. Then check your emails, including spam folder, to see if they send you a discount code to use.

HTH:)

These are some great tips. I am not really that confident when it comes to haggling. I do buy a lot of reduced items. I work at a supermarket so I get a lot of reduced meat etc and freeze it. I do haggle when I go to boot sales though. Although when I sold stuff at one I was surprised that no one wanted me to drop the price. I try to be frugal by planning my meals making lists and sticking to them for meals batch cooking and freezing and putting in lots of veg to top up meals. My shopping bill has halved. I never really buy clothes these days as I am always working.

I always haggle with expensive items. For example when buying a laptop, I will always ask for some extras thrown in like bags, memory sticks, software etc. With a mattress - free pillows. With a TV, a free stand. I'm merciless ;)

I also haggle in charity shops and car boots if I think they are asking for more than something is worth (to me)

Good ideas, last time I bought a guitar I got a case, plectrums, and a strap thrown in because I asked for it, worth asking!
