Hi, I'm going through a health scare at the moment, sorry would have name changed if I could. Hopefully it will be ok. I currently work as a freelance merchandiser/price checker, but if I have to go through treatment, I might not be able to travel here there and everywhere to say the least. The control freak in me is trying to get things lined up just in case. I'm wondering about customer service type freelance roles working from home. I used to work for Crisp Thinking but understand they have gone even more downhill recently. I've also got employment insurance but don't know if I will be covered. This is all hypothetical at the moment, but any advice would be welcome.

Have you tried Data Annotation? www.dataannotation.tech - weird and wacky but fun exam. Look up the answers (that's what they want) and be creative with your story and you'll be fine.

I'm so sorry to hear this. If the insurance covers it, don't force yourself to work at the expense of recovery (I know of what I speak...I only wish I didn't).

I'll try to think of more, but DA is my only non-music income source right now.

Hi, sorry to hear you're not well. I don't do much online at the moment as I'm finding it hard to locate work. Prolific is the only one I've kept up with. Have you tried the job centre, if you put work from home in the search bar quite a few jobs come up.

Thanks EdibleDormouse, sorry to hear you've had health issues. At the moment I don't know, I'm waiting for a referral. It might all turn out to be fine. I will be looking this up, just really feel that I need to have a back up plan.

Thanks Lemonade, I'm ok, just waiting for an appointment and don't know what its going to bring. Online opportunities have gone downhill, but I am doing Prolific

Hey @OCTOPUS, sorry to hear you're having a scare, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
I have been (and still am) where you are - became ill at 25, diagnosed at 26, and had to give up work (for an employer) at 27, so I'm 5 years deep in solely online self-employment now (plus sickness benefits from the gov... what little there is, because I can't even work many hours any more), and it IS hard, but manageable. You're in a better position than I was with actually having insurance, I hope you'll be able to make use of it if needs be.

Crisp isn't what it was, but I'm still with them, and Appen is an option too if you can get on a decent project. As @EdibleDormouse mentioned, DataAnnotation seems like it could be a good earner, if you can get on (I have writing/editing/creative experience, and wrote what I thought was a pretty good story for the test, but no luck for me). uTest doesn't come up much here any more, but they still have regular projects, if website/app testing is something you're interested in. Prolific and Intellizoom help as well, and being at home on the laptop more gives you a better chance of seeing and catching the better paid studies. If you have any skills you could offer on sites like PeoplePerHour and Upwork, they're worth a look too, even if it can be a bit of a race to the bottom, I have found some long-term clients through there - you can find diamonds if you wade through the shit enough.

Being poorly and having this sort of work worry hanging over you is really naff - feel free to drop me a DM any time if you want to chat with someone who knows what you're going through. Best of luck, you've got this!

Just to follow up on PPH/Fiverr etc., I've been having SOME luck with offering "I will clean up and fact-check your ChatGPT copy" gigs (although I do have a very established profile) so that might be worth a go. If you've got AI manipulation skills (or could learn them) that does seem to be popular and in demand.

Oddly enough, I recently worked on a short-term project doing this sort of thing for a LLM chatbot, but hadn't thought of offering that as a 'gig' on the freelance sites. It's quite reassuring (for now at least) when you see what AI churns out, as it very much still needs the human touch, some of it is absolutely abysmal.

Prolific is my best and consistently good earner. Testable Minds is similar but there aren’t many studies on there. Still worth checking though. I recently went back to Intellizoom to try It again. It’s horrendous! I get at least 10 emails a day which you can’t turn off loads of screenouts too despite profile filled out fully. Just finding it‘s just not worth it really. They should allow you to check in the site and still earn without receiving lots of emails. It used to be good I always qualified for nearly every single one but not now. I haven’t even tried the test to get better paid studies! Just loads more emails I don’t want.

Sorry to hear about this and hope everything turns out ok. I would definitely give your insurance company a call to ask about whether you are covered. My friend was able to access hers when she was made redundant and it was a real lifeline finance-wise. Sorry to say I don't have any real advice or in fact positive thoughts. You are right about CT, it's gone really quiet and at times I think the staff there are having a laugh and wasting people's time, making announcements that a lot of work is coming only to say two hours later, sorry they made a mistake and it isn't! You can still make money but certainly not anything like what you could a year or two ago. I did the data annotation test but also didn't hear back. Prolific is ok. I really think I need to think about a proper real-life job if things don't pick up. Sigh!
