Everyone has been talking about Facebook so I finally decided to create an account for myself after usually giving social media a wide berth.

So I registered, had to verify my identity via my mobile which I did, didn't add a photo as I'm not sure what I might use yet, searched for my friend who said I would love facebook and didn't get chance to request her friendship as facebook came up with some bizarre security thing about uploading a photo to prove it's me. It said I needed to upload a photo and they would check it's me and then delete it from their servers. Not sure how they can prove it's me as I have never had an account before.

I uploaded a photo and it kept saying it was invalid and then told me to upload ID to prove my identity.

WOW it was a social media account I wanted, not a new bank account! How do people have the patience for all this? Needless to say, I didn't want to give them my ID so will just leave it. I can't do anything with my account except log out so it's impossible to delete it. Hopefully they will close it for me. I suppose that's what I get for wanting to join the 'in crowd' and join in on social media

Blimey, what a palaver! I opened an account just for comping and didn't have to upload anything. I think I put a picture of one of my rats as a profile pic for ages before I bit the bullet and put one on of me.
Maybe they've tightened up on security lately. You can't delete an account on Facebook unless you ask them directly to do it for you, but you can deactivate it in your settings, so that it doesn't show up in searches. As soon as you log back in, it activates it again though.

Hi @OnAMission :) Funnily enough I was thinking of applying to FB today and am SO glad that I saw your post first (not glad for the hassle you had though).

I also never wanted to join any of the social media sites but felt that I might have to join FB in order to apply for the Social Media jobs at Appen. I will see if anyone else has similar problems first, I think.

Thank you very much for the heads up.

That sounds absolutely nuts... my profile pic here is mine on FB have never used my real mug as a profile pic... sounds a lot of hassle... personally i am thoroughly addicted to FB ...have been since day one... it is great for reconnecting with lost friends relatives etc... i am on several groups which are excellent (mostly groups on photography and musicians groups) also good for heads ups from the main Task Apps guys who post advance warnings of jobs coming... buy and sell groups are huge on FB too... i cant get enough of FB

Wow - a bit OTT no?!

I suppose they want to ensure that people are really who they say they are or something? I know @Jon had some trouble with Facebook recently too.

Worst thing is when you try and get some help NO-ONE ever gets back to you! So irritating.

Or.......you open the account OK, then when you use it, they block you for aggressive liking/sharing/friend requests! But isn't all of that just, I don't know, being social, which is what FB is all about?

@OnAMission - did you get any better results over time? @Jon what problems did you have with Facebook?

Can anyone who has recently applied to Facebook let me know how they got on PLEASE :)

I joined Facebook back when it was "oh, this will never be better than MySpace" new so it was a lot less hassle. I think due to more recent happenings with social media such as bullying, terrorism and the like, they've had to crack down hard in order to be able to co-operate with external bodies such as the police.

I know I've had friends who've had their account blocked until they've changed to their real name and proven it was them by uploading ID - so it's not just new accounts who have to do this. They do random sweeps.

If you want a Facebook account then you'll just have to go with it, I mean who doesn't want ID these days? Bookies and gaming sites require it all the time ;)

I remember having an ebay account in the late 90s and you had to provide ZERO id!

payments were also of the 'cash in an enverlope' variety as there was no PayPal in place

Looking back it seems nuts as you could just get ripped off buying a £1000 laptop or something and there was zero comeback but that was just the sort of way the Internet was back then.

I always think there was a lot more diversity and creativity as 'everything was new' that was being created then but obviously there was barely any security around it all lol

Okay, stupid question time :), if I do open a Facebook account just for Appen work, what do I actually need to put/do with it once it is opened?
Do I have to use my full, real name too?

Thanks

I've never had a facebook or instagram account. I've never owned an apple product either.

Somehow I still manage to function perfectly well.

This "real name" and having to put a photo of yourself up is one of the reasons forums still exist lol

Yep, me too but I need to bite the bullet and get a FB account to try Social Media projects with Appen etc

Proud to say I've never done a 'selfie' either, ha ha! Definitely old school ................

I get the security aspect of having to provide your real name but don't understand why you can't have a Username like everywhere else.

What do I actually need to put/do with it once it is opened, for Appen etc?

Thanks:)

Aaarrgghh! Needed to sort out driving licence renewal before applying for a Facebook account and just had an email from Appen inviting me to the Falcon project - course I can't accept it as not got all the criteria and daren't do the Master thingy Agreement just in case. Have emailed them about it but it's probably too late now anyway.

It is annoying that I have told them at least 3-4 times now that I do not currently have a Facebook account or Smartphone but they still keep sending me these useless invites!

I was offered a WSE position with them about a month ago but by the time I accepted (a few hours later) they had all gone apparently and I am SUPPOSED to be top of the list for the next batch but as I have seen others being emailed WSE jobs this week (nope, not me), I am not holding my beaky breath.

With regards to the Facebook account - just seen that I would need 25 or more people on it anyway, which is not possible for me. Is there anyway of achieving this figure - preferably without using family etc?

Thanks

Do you have any friends that use Facebook that you could add to help take you to the 25 needed people?
