Has anyone ever done this? My daughter has had a letter this morning summoning her for jury duty and is feeling rather nervous about the prospect. Although the letter gives a brief outline of what to expect, it doesn't really go into much detail.

I've not done it but what is it that makes you feel nervous about your daughter doing it.

It's her that's feeling nervous, not me - I'd probably find it fascinating. It's just that it's an unknown thing for her. She's got diabetes, so she's worried about what will happen if she needs to eat or treat during the trial, but I'm sure she's not the first to be in that situation. She's also worried about work, as she has a feeling that they either won't let her have the time off, or they won't pay her if they do.
I'm sure all will be fine, but she's just interested to hear about other people's experiences and what it was like.

My understanding was that they can't say she can't have the time off. Would it not go down as Special Leave anyway?

People at work have done it and just say there is a bit of waiting around at the start but once it gets going it's fine

I've just been reading through the pack. It looks like your employer has to give the time, but they don't have to pay. In which case you have to claim loss of earnings from the court, but it's nowhere near what she would earn at work.

I think it's more the what will happen type of thing than anything.

I had the letter last year. I had to call up on the Sunday before going there on the Monday but the message said they only wanted people up to X number (I was over that) and to call back next day. This went on daily until the Thursday when they said all cases had been suspended so my jury duty was over.

They will pick more than needed though so even if she goes there on her date, she may not be selected. Just tell her to take a book/something to do and snacks as there can be a lot of waiting.

Thanks for that. That's the sort of info that they don't give in the letter :)

I've never done it but I've often wondered what happens if you work from home full time, are you just expected to lose your earnings for the time you are on jury service?

From reading the letter, you can claim expenses from the court for loss of earnings. I think it was about £37 a day-ish. So I would presume that if you are self employed, that is what you would get - but then again, I could be wrong, as I often am lol.

REALLY interesting

I suppose you would get your £37 a day but there is nothing stopping you still doing the SE work in the evenings meaning you are basically getting paid £37 a day extra!

Sometimes you can get excused for work related reasons. My partner got called twice, the first time he had to attend but then they go to jury selection and he was asked if he had any commitments and he said he really couldn't be off work and they told him he could leave but would be called again at some point, when they called him the second time he was unwell and got the doctor to give him a sick line for it

Assuming they are full 9-5 days then £37 seems a bit rubbish! Hope I don't get called!

How did she get on Topaz?

Guess who received their second citation  Phoned for an excusal as baby would only be 5 weeks. They didn't even want proof I'd given birth but means I'll be called AGAIN within 6-12 months.
