Hi,

Forgive me if this has been posted before.

I recently found out that the amount personal allowance allowed on your tax if you are married had changed.

I went to the GOV.UK website and there filled out a few details about my wifes earnings.

It was really simple - no hard questions.

About 2 weeks later I received a letter informing me that my Tax code has now changed and a cheque for just over £400 which is backdated tax for the last 2 years.

Marriage Allowance lets you transfer £1,150 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner - if they earn more than you. This reduces their tax by up to £230 in the tax year (6 April to 5 April the next year). To benefit as a couple, you (as the lower earner) must have an income of £11,500 or less.

Yes we did this and also got it backdated for 2 years. £400 from HMRC, I nearly fell off my chair!

Got my FIL onto this a few weeks ago after he was stung with a surprise tax bill; his old employer clearly couldn't do PAYE.
He phoned up his tax office and got it applied straight away. Dead easy.

I looked into this before but apparently I (or the wife) earn too much - does that sound right?

Yes, one of you needs to be within your personal allowance and the other needs to be over it but not past the higher rate tax threshold.

I've been trying to convince a friend to do this but they are so afeared of dealing with the tax office they just won't contact them!
Good to hear that it is easy though. Might try again.

We get this. I earn below the threshold at the moment so husband can claim it. Takes about £20 a month off his tax bill.

Yup one of you needs to be a non-taxpayer, so under the personal allowance which for most people was £11,500 for the current tax year, £11,000 the year before and £10,600 the year before that. Other half has to be basic rate taxpayer.
Works by transfering 10% of the personal allowance from the non taxpayer to the taxpayer, so the taxpayer can earn more money before they start paying tax (but don't worry about the technicalities because HMRC sort all that out).
Loads of couples are in this situation and don't claim the free money, yet it's super easy and people can get payments backdated to 2015.
